REVIEW: PRIMAL

02/09/08

SYNOPSIS: Serene
wilderness…or deadly killing grounds? Something strange is
happening in a remote forest. Many have come, but nobody has
ever left alive. A group of unsuspecting college students
embark on a mission into the forest in hopes of finding
evidence of endangered species. What they don’t realize is
they have wandered onto the feeding grounds of a vicious and
calculating predator. One by one, they are hunted down and
killed by the regions’ infamous mythical Sasquatch. Will
anyone survive the beast’s insatiable appetite for flesh?
REVIEW: Primal is a movie about one of the most
mysterious creatures in our culture, Big Foot. People still
nowadays claimed to have seen the creature, others just take
the mater as a joke. Nonetheless this unknown creature still
is a good choice for an scary movie, however Primal did not
exploited him adequately. The synopsis of the movie although
intriguing and convincing; it is also deceiving. It is true
that in low budget movies like Primal, the expectations
should not be kept high.
I can forgive that the monster’s looks, the dialogue, and
the characters were unconvincing, and I can even give the
director some complements in trying to make a scary movie
during day time, to TRY to used some different camera
effects like the grind house effect (notice that I state
TRY, since these effects do not worked at all, actually make
the movie worse) , and actually by naming a real location,
where people actually have claimed to see Big Foot, Klamath
National Forest, but the fact that being a horror movie
there is not a surprising or attractive scenes, at least
make Big Foot jump on a victim or hide well or something,
that all the action scenes are the same scene played over
and over, and most important that there is not a persuasive
and cohesive story what so ever, makes the 88 minute movie
an eternity. The final credits are without a doubt the best
part of the movie.
A person watching these type of movies should not hope to
see great special effects or make up or outstanding acting
either, but people, or at least me, expect a good plot,
something that makes them think that with more talented
people and a bit more money the movie could have gone
somewhere. Unfortunately, Primal is not that movie, It lacks
genre (it is horror, comedy, drama who knows), the plot is
weak the characters are bland and everything is just too
predictable; It just does not stimulates any pleasant human
emotion.

I rented this movie and
made it about 20 minutes into it. I
cannot say enough bad things about it.
It is the only movie that I have ever
paid for that I stopped watching before
it ended. It looks like it was shot in
someone's backyard with a handycam, and
the monster is wearing a mask from
K-Mart. I can't really give you a plot,
because there really wasn't one as far
as I could tell. I thought about calling
the cable company and lambasting them
for even having a movie like this
available, but I kind of want to wash my
hands of this experience. |
