REVIEW: REAPER Season Two
06/5/09
The second season of reaper
tries to recreate the same creative, peculiar, and odd story
of a young man, who has unfairly lost his soul to the devil,
and is forced to do deeds for him, while trying to figure a
way to break the deal. However during the episodes it seems
that the magic and charmed of the first season in no longer
there. For some reason, the second season does not feel as
smart, original and captivating as the original, I don’t
know what it was, probably that the story did not develop as
well as in last season with new characters that sometimes
seem to be forced or unnecessary, or with episodes that did
not add anything to the story, or even some of the comical
situations seem to be recycle from old TV shows. As a whole
the series is not as great as the first one, however not
everything is bad, there are some episodes that will tempted
you to keep watching, they make it seem that something good
is about to happen, but then you are disappointed to see
that it was just an illusion, that nothing is coming, since
the next episode seems to forget what just had happened.
The main cast in the series, however saves this season for a
total catastrophe, Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Rick
Gonzalez and Missy Peregrym playing Sam, Sock, Ben and Andi
respectively, return with the same chemistry and humor as
the first series. They make the character sympathetic and
the episodes tolerable, and of course the best performance
is without a doubt made by the Devil himself: Ray Wise. He
is just Mr. cool, in each of his appearances he just gives
you a feeling of elegance, charm, vanity, and prepotency
that just the devil has. Of course he also looks and have
his evil moment in a comical way. The new members of the
Series however did not had the same chemistry and sympathy
as this four, it was not that they did not acted right, it
was just that the character seemed empty without purpose,
like Nina, Mr. Oliver, Kristen and Morgan. Specially the
case or Morgan (One of the Devil’s sons) seemed to be one of
those cases that seemed to be going somewhere interesting in
the story and was all of the sudden let go, another let down
is Sam‘s attitude in some episodes, he seems more
comfortable as a reaper and some of his behavior suggests
that he does not want to brake his deal with the devil
anymore, and the worst part I considered the second season
has is that it dedicates like four or more episodes to a
romantic side stories between Ben and Nina, and Sock and
Kristen which seems unnecessary, and sometimes annoying, no
more than two episodes should have to be spent describing
this relationships.
Visually the Series look as good as it could be, nothing
special but the special effects get the point across. The
acting seems to be good, the same mythology of the first
season is kept which is a good thing like the ingenious and
diabolical vessels the Devil hands out to Sam, the chats
between Sam and the Devil, and it has some comical remarks
and situations that might let you have a good time. However
storyline wise the series let you down somehow, out of the
13 episodes there are like 5 that are relevant to the main
story, the rest were just like filler episodes to extend the
series, and also some of the magical aspects of the series
gets lots like the original powers Sam used to have, and the
enemies it used to fight. It is said that the series has
been cancelled by the CW, it is a shame because the last
episode of the second season leaves the door open to a third
season of much improvement. I recommend this series to fans
of the series, also to people who enjoy TV shows like Buffy
and Death like me.
