REVIEW: Risky Business 25th
Anniversary

09/14/08

There comes a time in the
movies when a talented generation of young actors are gather
in a great comedy, launching each one of them into stardom
and creating their own names. Last year was Superbad, with
Michael Cera and Jona Hill, some years ago was the turn for
Jason Biggs, Sean Willian Scotts, Tyra Reed and Shanon
Elizabeth’s American Pie series. All these actors although
not exceptional have made their name after their great
success thanks to a teen comedy. Not that they have not
acted before but it was that particular movie that make them
stars. In 1983 it was the turn of Tom Cruise, Rebecca De
Morney and Curtis Armstrong with their Risky Business. It
has been 25 years and the movie still involve the audience
and delivers great amount of laughs. Warner brothers is re
releasing this classic comedy on September 16 2008, and if
you are a fan of teen comedies and have not seen it, this
one is a most watch and have for you.
For those who do not know what the movie is about, the movie
is the story about Joel Goobsen , Tom Cruise, a wealthy high
school student who lives with his parents . He is in his
senior year and a future enterpriser, and as normal he is
excited for the future, he dreams of college, sex, money,
cars and girls. Fortunately for him, all his dreams began to
come true when his parents decide to go away on a trip and
leave him by himself to take care of the house, since as his
mother says it he has good judgment. Everything goes wild,
when his friend began to tease him to go wild, and it is his
friend Miles who pushed him the furthest when he calls a
Call girl for his friend. Although this encounter does not
ends up as well, since the call girl is not exactly his
type, he end up getting a phone number of a more fitting
match. Although doubting at first, he gives these new girl a
trial, Rebecca DeMornay, and end up being everything he was
waiting for and more, he has the night of his life, but in
the morning when the girl ask for her payment he seem short
of money. He decides to leave her in her house while he gets
the money. When he comes back he discovered that a valuable
object has disappear from his house. Now he goes in look for
this girl to get what she had stolen, but in the process he
ends up helping the girl to escape her abusive pimp,
creating his own business, falling in love, getting
suspended from school, getting everything stolen again, ruin
his dad‘s Porsche, and getting admitted to Princeton.
Although the story has all the elements of a teen movie,
like young guys in a quest to have sex, peer pressure,
graduation, and inexplicable situations everything flows
smoothly, and nothing seems force. The script is smart and
funny, and everything seems in place from music and
photography and event the scene with the Porshe adds some
excitement and make this movie a more refined than any other
movie of the genre. Another important aspect what make this
movie excels is that it is not sex based, although it deals
with characters such as prostitutes the level of nudity is
kept to the minimum, concentrating more in the story. As I
said before this movie is great for the amount of talent
displayed by the actors. Tom Cruise is exceptional making
the transition from insecure rich boy to a young
enterpriser, he really live his part to the fullest. The
beautiful Rebecca DeMornay also gives us a great performance
interpreting this ambitious call girl, although she looks
and behaves more like a college student than an actual call
girl. Joe Pantoliano and Curtis Armstrong also are
outstanding in their parts as a pimp and Joel’s Best friend
respectively. But the list does not ends there everybody
Richard Masur, Bronson Pinchot, and Sheera Denise contribute
with their characters to make this movie great.
It is hard to say that this movie is a classic, beginning
because I don’t think there are not many movies in this
genre which such a title, since as time changes also our
perspective of funny changes. But I have to say that the
movie is Exceptional, the movie even has unforgettable
scenes and quates that distinguish it from any other one
like Tom Cruise Sliding in his living room in underpants and
dancing Rock and Roll and miles unforgettable quote: ”Every
now and then just say what the fuck” will always stay in the
minds of people who watch this movie. I saw my little
younger cousins watching it I was stunned that after 25 year
of its release it still attracts the audience it was
intended for, and not only that it also catches the
attention of the older ones too. Also I had to say that it
looks great in its DVD version, its transfer to digital
format makes this movie look as good as the first time, but
with brighter colors, and clearer sound. Risky Business’s
intelligent story and funny situations makes this Business
not risky at all. If that it is not a classic I do not what
it is.
