Roberto Rossellini Collector's Edition
11/08/08

The latest
installment of The Director’s Series, Lionsgate’s collection
featuring works from exceptional film directors across the
world, arrives this November with The Director’s Series:
Rossellini 2-Disc Collector’s Edition. Famed filmmaker
Roberto Rossellini was an innovator in the style of Italian
cinema known as “Italian Neorealism,” which focused on
stories of working-class Italians in post-World War II
Italy. Often using non-actors, Rossellini crafted a
technique that influenced the work of Vittorio De Sica,
Michelangelo Antonioni, Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini
and, decades later, Martin Scorsese. The Director’s Series:
Rossellini 2-Disc Collector’s Edition includes two classic
films never before available on DVD in the U.S. – Era Notte
a Roma (Escape by Night), Golden Gate Award Winner at the
San Francisco International Film Festival; and Dov’e la
liberta? (Where is Freedom?), which was declared
“Rossellini’s best film” by Cahiers du Cinema. Featuring
stylish foil stamp packaging, The Director’s Series:
Rossellini 2-Disc Collector’s Edition arrives on November
11, 2008
Era Notte a Roma (Escape by Night)
Described as “the Italian condition as understood by
Rossellini after 15 years of ups and downs in the postwar
world” by The New York Times and a “very intelligent work of
enormous humanity” by Time Out, Era Notte a Roma is the
story of three allied prisoners – a Russian, an American and
an Englishman – who attempt to escape still-occupied Italy
with the help of a young couple from Rome
Dov’e la liberta? (Where is Freedom?)
A barber convicted of murder spends 20 years in
prison. Upon his release, he finds the changed world an
unforgiving place and realizes the flaws in the family he
left decades ago. Soon, he learns his only hope for peace is
to find a way back behind bars. Cahiers du Cinema hailed
Dov’e la liberta? As “Rossellini’s best film, and one of the
few I completely love.”
