REVIEW: Scarlett Johansson Collection
02/27/09
Three
dramatic films from one of Hollywood’s favorite “It” girls
are now available in one DVD collection – the Scarlett
Johansson Collection. Four-time Golden Globe® nominee and
BAFTA award winner (Best Performance by an Actress in a
Leading Role, Lost in Translation) Scarlett Johansson has
been one of the most acclaimed young actresses of her
generation. The compilation includes Girl with a Pearl
Earring (nominated for three Academy Awards®, Best Art
Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design,
2003), A Good Woman and An American Rhapsody. Featuring
brand new O-card packaging the Scarlett Johansson Collection
is available on March 3, 2009.
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING SYNOPSIS:
Seventeen-year-old Griet (Johansson) must work to support
her family and becomes a maid in the house of Johannes
Vermeer (Emmy® nominee Colin Firth, TV’s “Conspiracy”).
During her stay, she gradually attracts the master painter’s
attention. Johannes and Griet must hide their mutual
attraction from his volatile wife Catharina (Essie Davis,
Australia). The wealthy and troublemaking Master van Ruijven
(two-time Academy Award® nominee Tom Wilkinson, In the
Bedroom, 2001; Michael Clayton, 2007) senses the intimacy
between the artist and his maid and contrives a commission
for Vermeer to paint Griet alone. The result will be one of
the greatest paintings ever created, but at what cost? Of
Johansson’s performance, Richard Roeper raved, “for the
first time in her brilliant young career, Scarlett Johansson
is the centerpiece of a film – and she carries it mostly
through her wonderfully expressive face.”
A GOOD WOMAN SYNOPSIS:
Called “one
of the best films of the new year” (Houston Chronicle), A
Good Woman follows the lives of a vacationing American
couple, the Windermeres (Johansson and Mark Umbers,
Cassandra’s Dream). They meet scandal when caught up in a
web of British slander after Mr. Windermere apparently
starts having an affair with the notorious gold-digger, Mrs.
Erlynne (Academy Award® winner Helen Hunt, As Good As it
Gets, 1997). Meanwhile, the debauched Lord Darlington
(Stephen Campbell Moore, The Bank Job) takes it upon himself
to comfort the tearful and lovely Mrs. Windermere, and Tuppy
(Tom Wilkinson), an older member of the British circle, sees
there’s a sweet woman being hurt by all the malicious gossip
and falls for Mrs. Erlynne himself.
AN AMERICAN
RHAPSODY SYNOPSIS:
In 1950, a
Hungarian couple, Peter (Tony Goldwyn, Ghost) and Margit
(Golden Globe® winner Nastassja Kinski, Tess), are forced to
flee the oppressive communist country for the United States.
They are able to take their eldest daughter, but are forced
to leave behind their infant daughter Suzanne (Johansson)
who is raised by kindly foster couple. Six years later,
Peter and Margit arrange for the American Red Cross to bring
Suzanne to their new home in Los Angeles where the perplexed
youth is forced to accept her sudden change in home and
country. At age 15, the rebellious and insecure Suzanne
tries to come to terms with her roots and decides to travel
back to Budapest, Hungary to find her true identity.
“Johansson gets to the rebellious and thoughtful core of her
character with a disarming ease” (Philadelphia Inquirer).
