REVIEW: SLEUTH
03/22/08
It’s not an easy thing to
make a movie interesting, but the job is twice as hard when
you only have a two men cast. It doesn’t hurt that the two
men cast is composed of Michael Caine and Jude Law. Kenneth
Branagh did a good job handling this type of structure and
keeping the film exciting, however the end result is not
satisfactory.
Sleuth begins when Milo Tindle (Jude Law) arrives at Michael
Caine’s (Andrew Wyke) home which construct is an elaborate
set piece. Milo informs Andrew that he wants him to grant
his wife a divorce, so that he can marry her. Andrew tells
Milo that his wife is a woman that needs a man with a lot of
money which he cannot provide. Milo says that she is in
love, but Andrew shoots back that the love won’t last.
Andrew suggest that he wants to get rid of his wife, but he
wants it to be a sure thing. He doesn’t want her to ever
come back. Andrew hatches a plan where Milo breaks into his
home and steals a necklace that is worth one million dollar.
All is not what it seems and here are where the games begin.
Sleuth starts of as a competition for a woman, Andrew’s
wife, but ends as a competition about two men’s ego. This is
what leads to the bizarre ending which I will not get into,
but suffice it to say that it might not make sense to a lot
of people unless you know that this is a power struggle. The
movie does manage to be entertaining, but only because
you’ll want to see what it all is going to lead to.
The performances by Jude Law and Michael Caine are
stupendous and given that they are on the screen all the
time and manage to be intriguing is enough to note they are
both very talented actors. The set design was stupendous and
was really put to use; it also created that dark atmosphere
the movie needed.
