The Sophia
Loren 4-Film Collection, part of Lionsgate’s The Celebrity
Series - a compilation of films featuring world-renowned
film stars - debuts on DVD this June. Winner of the Academy
Award® for Best Actress in a Leading Role (Two Women) and
granted an Honorary Academy Award® for “a career rich with
memorable performances,” Sophia Loren is one of the silver
screen’s biggest international sex symbols and one of the
most famous Italian actresses of all time, starring in films
such as It Started in Naples, El Cid, Matrimonio
all'italiana, Prêt-à-Porter, Houseboat, The Black Orchid and
The Fall of the Roman Empire. Now, four of her classic
movies will be made available for the first time on DVD in
one unique box set, including I Girasoli, which received an
Academy Award® nomination for Best Original Score and earned
Loren a David Di Donatello Award for Best Actress; and
Carosello Napoletano, which garnered the International Prize
at the Cannes Film Festival. The collection also includes
Attila, Madame Sans-Gĕne and a special featurette, “Sophia
Loren: La Diva Popolana,” created exclusively for this set.
A must-have for any film fan, the Sophia Loren 4-Film
Collection will be presented in limited edition, collectible
packaging and made available on June 10, 2008.
I GIRASOLI SYNOPSIS:
Antonio and
Giovanna, a young married couple, are separated by war. Sent
to the Russian front, Antonio is found half dead by a young
peasant girl, Mascia, who takes care of him. After thinking
for several years that Antonio is dead, Giovanna is suddenly
consumed with doubt and sets off to find him. After a long
search in Russia, she does find him - but is he still
waiting for her after all this time? Directed by legendary
Italian director Vittorio De Sica.
ATTILA SYPNOSIS:
450 A.D.
Attila the Hun is threatening an increasingly decadent,
orgiastic Roman Empire. Only Aetius, an officer in the army,
realizes the danger threatening Rome and leads the Imperial
Army against the ‘Scourge of God.’
MADAME SANS-GENE SYNOPSIS:
Catherine, a
laundress, makes the acquaintance of François Lefebvre, a
young sergeant. She promises to join him after the
revolution but decides she can’t wait any longer. When she
meets up with him on the battlefield, the couple is caught
by the Austrians. They destroy the enemy’s arsenal and
escape, after which François easily rises through the ranks
of the military. However, the Imperial Court is not as
enamored with Catherine, whose offhandedness prompts
Napoleon to order François to choose another woman if he is
to advance his career.
CAROSELLO NAPOLETANO SYNOPSIS:
Carosello
Napoletano is a colorful view of Naples and its history seen
in different scenes of music and dance, featuring
performances by the Marquis de Cuevas ballet, Keita Fodeba's
African ensemble, Yvette Chauviré, Folco Lulli, Paola Stoppa
and more.

FEATURES: “Sophia Loren: La Diva Popolana” featurette –
Examines Loren’s early life struggles during her upbringing
in
Italy that led her to become one of the world’s most beloved
actresses. Interviews with her sons Carlo Ponti Jr. and
Edoardo Ponti as well as I Girasoli producer Arthur Cohn and
Italian film Experts Aine O’Healy and Marsha Kinder will
explore how these experiences resulted in a string of
unforgettable performances that not only cemented her place
as a tímeles ‘sex goddess’ but also ‘La Diva Popolana’ – the
star of the people.
