REVIEW:
The Spectacular Spider Man Volume 2

03/14/09

Spectacular,
Spectacular Spiderman! I have to say that out of all opening
theme songs this franchise had had over the year this is one
is the best. Once again our not typical junior high school
student, Peter Parker, is starting off with another exciting
adventure. Battling bad guys, supporting his aunt, deal with
high school life, and concealing his secret identity from
his friends and the rest of the world, Peter Parker is now
faced with a new class and even more powerful set of
criminals. “The Spectacular Spiderman Vol. 2 Rise of the
Super Villains” is the next step in the popular animated
series based on Marvel's Comic’s iconic character, and it
will be released in a dual set for fans who could not get
enough from the wall crawler.
Having watching the Volume I, I was fascinated with some of
the things The Spectacular series had brought to the table
like the new designs, the action and the new direction of
the already know story. While the story line of Volume one
was good, I did not feel Spidy was challenged enough.
Vulture, Enforcers, and Electro are great villains for the
first introductory episodes, nonetheless, in my opinion they
lack the chemistry that other more popular character have
with the main character. The Lizard although has more
chemistry and charisma to the fans . The writers and
producers understood that, and they spike the series up
introducing a more classical and challenging set of villains
like the Shocker, The Sand man, and the Unstoppable Rhino,
and it sets the stage for future appearances for two of the
best villains in the Spiderman universe. These, plus the
already known superhero, his personal conflicts, and the
debut of J. Jonah Jameson gives you a result of about 69
minutes of pure action, laughs and fun for everyone (young
and old) to enjoy.
Volume II keeps the same rhythm of volume I, The animation,
the humor and the action is kept the same, the improvement
is seen in the stories and characters shown. The series
begins to evolved along with Peter. It is not only about the
superhero life but also about his other side his human
everyday life that fans seems to relate. In these episodes
he realized the economic situation his aunt is in, and he
forced himself to take responsibility as a man, also his
personal life seems to be more affected here, when he is
interacting with his friends and school rivals. These makes
this volume better than its predecessor. Of course, the
first one was the introduction and it is natural for this
set to get more in detail. Animation, and look wise it is
obvious to say it is the same as the first volume, a more
kids oriented look with bright colors and dialogues that are
kept simple for everyone to enjoy.
Of course, these set has also the same fallacies that the
first installment has, which is common in this kind of
series where the writers try to tell a story in a 30 minute
window, the resolutions are easily resolved within 5
minutes. Although I have say that in this set a more
consistent flow is with the introduction of the Tombstone
character each episode is being linked to the next to the
end. I have to say that this series continues to impress me
in its development, each episode continuously adds some
freshness to a story that has been around for more than
three decades. It is true that these adaptation is far from
the original story, however, it is a new introduction for a
newer generation of Spiderman fans and a fresh version for
older fans to relived again the endless adventures of your
friendly Neighborhood Spiderman. I recommend this DVD to
people who has seen the first volume, or who saw and enjoy
the TV show, to new comers who enjoy animated shows like
X-Men Evolution, or the Batman. This new version will not
disappoint.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
I have to say that this
DVD disappoints in the Special features department. For such
amount of material this character has, the production should
have put something, nonetheless I rather have nothing than
the classical, and boring fillers. For me the episodes are
just good enough, and if you are an Spiderman fan you
probably have the Special editions of the movies that talks
about his mythology and characters.
