REVIEW: TEETH

05/04/08

Have you heard about the
movie Teeth? If you have, you’ll probably want to run out as
soon as possible as the subject matter boggles the mind.
Well, if you haven’t heard about Teeth, let me be the first
to tell you that it’s about vagina dentata. Yeah that’s
right, and that is not a form of gingivitis. Vagina dentata
is Latin for toothed vagina. The myth is a cautionary tale
about the dangers of sex. With Teeth, writer/director
Mitchell Lichtenstein has crafted a controversial, but
original dark comedy that will certainly have people
talking.
In Teeth, Dawn (Jess Weixler ) takes a vow of chastity and
is also a speaker in a group promoting the concept of
virginity until marriage. Dawn struggles with her promise to
stay pure after meeting (Tobey) Hale Appleman. Giving in to
their hormones, the two begin to mess around in a cave by
the lake, but Dawn soon finds herself having second
thoughts. Dawn begins to push Tobey away, but Tobey cannot
stop himself and begins to forcible rape her. After a few
seconds, Tobey is in shock, he has been struck by the vagina
dentata. Not knowing what has just transpired, Dawn is also
in shock. As a matter of fact, the only person who had been
a victim of the vagina dentata before Tobey was Dawn’s older
stepbrother, Brad (John Hensley). Brad had a piece of this
finger sliced off, at a very young age. However, not knowing
what exactly happened Brad still suffers from a subconscious
fear of conventional sex.
Dawn searches the internet and finds that her affliction
might be a myth known as the vagina dentata, and that the
only thing that can free her is a hero that can overcome the
toothed beast. After a strange encounter with a
gynecologist, who confirms the diagnoses of vagina dentata,
Dawn seeks the help of Ryan (Ashley Springer) who might be
able to defeat the beast.
Writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein did a good job keeping
the movie from getting too ridicules and focusing on the
central theme of empowering women through the process of
evolution. Mitchell Lichtenstein’s use of the power plant in
the background and the biology teacher’s reference to Dawn
that she was the next step in the evolutionary ladder are
some of the little things that carry the movie and keep it
some what grounded. But best of all, the movie will have you
laughing so hard you almost feel guilty.
Dimension’s Extreme Films division is releasing the DVD on
May 6, 2008 with a 29 minute long behind the scenes that
goes in depth on the subject of vagina dentata. Five deleted
scenes are also presented, but only two are worth watching.
To say that this is the most original movie I’ve seen this
year is an understatement. This movie is a definite must see
for any avid film lover.
