REVIEW: THE BUCKET LIST

06/08/08

What would you do if you
knew that you have six more months to live? Do you go out and
do the things you always wanted? or perhaps you would
submerge yourself into a deep depression? These are tough
question to answer. Even if you answered to do the
things that you always wanted, the moment of truth can
quickly change things around. Rob Reiner's "The Bucket List"
tackles on this dilemma by creating a pretty decent comedy
without forgetting the impact of such devastating news on a person's life.
The Bucket List is the
story of billionaire Edward Cole (Jack Nicholson) and
a mechanic Carter Chambers (Morgan Freeman), who meet in the
hospital's room in a time when both are fighting terminal cancer. During their stay at the hospital they
become good friends. Their bond of friendship becomes
stronger once they received the
news that their illness is so advanced that they may only have a
few more months to live. It is this situation what
triggers their need to create
the bucket list. A list of things to do before dying.
This is one of those movies
that I really underestimated when it came out in theaters
back in December of last year. I was expecting to see a lot
of drama and little comedy, but it was the other way around
lots of comedy and little drama in spite of the subject.
This is why I probably enjoyed this film. Most likely you
are not going to be lucky enough to meet a billionaire in a
hospital's room, who is going to help you fulfill your
last will. The story is not very realistic, however it can
happen to a certain extent.
The main reason that this movie gets a passing score from me
is that Rob Reiner and Justin Zackham decided to focus more
in the development of these two characters and did not try
to make this film a family drama. Like it was expected
Jack Nicholson provided the comedy and Morgan Freeman
provided the wisdom. Making these two Hollywood stars the
heart and soul of the film. Without them this would have
been just another Lifetime channel movie event.
