REVIEW: THE CODE

06/21/09

OVERVIEW:
First Look Studios proudly
announces the DVD release of THE CODE. This
exhilarating action film is from acclaimed director Mimi
Leder (Deep Impact), and features an all-star cast led by
Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas and Radha Mitchell. Master
thieves Ripley (Freeman) and Gabriel (Banderas) join forces
to pull off a $40 million heist – but a monumental robbery
like this is never easy and rarely without competition. THE
CODE is a non-stop action film available on DVD on June 23,
2009.
SYNOPSIS:
While pulling a down-and-dirty
jewelry heist on a subway train, Gabriel (Antonio Banderas)
encounters Ripley (Morgan Freeman), a legendary thief who
was casing the same job. In spite of Gabriel’s initial
reluctance, Ripley manages to rope him into an impossible
job: the theft of two priceless Faberge Imperial Eggs from
the heavily guarded vault of a New York diamond wholesaler.
The stakes rise for Gabriel and Ripley when Ripley’s
goddaughter (Rhada Mitchell) is kidnapped by the KGB.
Staying one step ahead of the NYPD, the FBI, the diamond
merchants and the vicious Russian KGB crime boss determined
to have the priceless eggs for himself, Gabriel and Ripley
must find a way to pull off the heist and make it out alive.
THE CODE is full of deceit, thievery and twists at every
turn.
REVIEW: It is hard to believe a
movie directed by Mimi Leder, starring Antonio Banderas and
Morgan Freeman is going straight to DVD. That is the case
of "The Code" . A film with high expectations and a
twenty five million dollar budget that just more of the
same.
After watching this film, it easy too see why this film went
straight to DVD, it is just more of the same. A couple
of thieves fabricating an impossible heist with everything
against them. There is nothing new that can set this film
apart from the rest, other than the little twist at the end.
Not even the cast was able to take "The Code" to the next
level. Morgan Freeman just continue to play the same wise
character that just had everything well plan. The same can
be said about Antonio Banderas that doesn't seem to leave
his Desperado character of a cool ladies macho man
that has everything under control.
The Code serves one purpose
and one purpose only, entertain in the absent of anything
better.
DVD: In this DVD the film is presented in widescreen
16x9 with a 2.35:1. The picture is complemented with a 5.1 Dolby
