THE
DEATHS OF IAN STONE
AFTER DARK
HORRORFEST

03/16/08

This is my 2nd encounter
with my favorite genre’s biggest event, the Horrorfest’s
“Eight films to Die For” and I have to admit I was
impressed. This unique film has such an original premise
that I was captivated through the entire film and couldn’t
wait to see how it concluded. Also hidden in its fantastic
sci-fi vibe is a sweet love story that makes it the perfect
date movie. It has cool special effects and creepy scenes
for the guys and a hidden romantic plot for the chic flick
lovers. It’s the perfect balance of originality, thrills,
action and romance, which was unexpected considering it’s in
a Horrorfest.
The film starts off simple enough, with a young man in
college at his hockey game. On his way home he encounters a
dark figure, which results in his untimely death. Instead of
heaven or an afterlife however, he wakes up in another life
which he seems to recognize, yet all the time he feels a
strange presence watching. After the second time he is
murdered he begins to realize there’s more to his life and
past than he ever imagined and he must remember his past and
protect the only constant in his lives, a beautiful and
familiar woman named Jenny, if he is to save her and
himself.
Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, Poseidon) did an amazing job as the
confused Ian Stone. He was intense and versatile, and
brought a depth to this character that really helped to
solidify this films plot. The film itself has both the
creepy and thrilling elements that horror film should have
yet it also had a sweet and romantic element and a strong
message of how love can be more powerful than everything,
including evil. The message of love and redemption made this
more than just a regular horror film, and the sci-fi subject
matter cemented it as a versatile film that everyone will
enjoy. I will definitely be adding this to my favorites
list.
