REVIEW: The Eye 3

06/23/08

Having seen the
American version of the Eye I had to say that The Eye 3
rocks. The pang brothers showed me a more entertaining and
engaging story catching my attention from beginning to the
end. They even make me put the original Eye and the Eye 2 in
my queued list for next rentals. The movie is as one of the
brothers describes it “a Roller coaster full of funny
moments on the top and scary ones at the bottom.” The story
is totally different from the previous two. This time, is a
teen horror movie kind of thing, where silly teenagers in
search for fun and excitement decide to go ghost hunting by
playing a series of games found in an ancient and mysterious
Thai book, and what begins as a fun and enjoyable pastime
ends up in a horrifying experience in which they can not go
back.
The movie is not as extreme and terrifying as many other
Asian horror movies, nonetheless it builds an intriguing
story while adding a few comical remarks that will keep the
audience interested for the whole 86 minutes. This is one of
the aspects that I liked about the movie, how the directors
combined situations in a way that the humor complements the
frightful situations giving the audience a second breath
after each game. Another important characteristic of the
movie is the games, although many of them are based on
eastern urban legends and superstitions some of them are
also very similar to western ones, like the Ouija board, in
game one or the black cat at midnight. The production team
did an stupendous job in generating these creative games
without making the story boring or un and the best
characteristic I found is how the directors tied the
previous movies to this one showing characters and events
from the previous ones. Character wise the movie depicts an
everyday modern group of young people, it has all the
stereotypes a group has, the lazy one, the romantic, the
coward, and the brave, making it easy for the audience to be
identified with one or more of them, and each actor perform
well in depicting each character. Also the lightning, sound
and settings are magnificent depicted , the three combine
give the right emotion when its needed.
Where the movie loses some excitement is in the special
effects department, sometimes the ghost are just not scary
enough, more effort in the make up should have been done to
create a more frightening atmosphere, also some of the
effects seem to give the effect that the movie is old, from
1980s old, specially the CGI graphics like the ghost at the
hide and seek game, the levitation takes and the crazy tong
scene. Nonetheless these faults are overshadowed by the
story and a well thought ending that will let the fans
satisfied.
The Pang brothers are without a doubt writing their names in
the horror genre as two of the most promising and capable
directors nowadays. They have managed to create an
interesting franchise with the Eye. Their unique style in
creating and telling unique and appealing stories will
without a doubt put them as two of the most distinguish
eastern directors. I recommend this movie to fans of the
series, or fans of the genre in general, the Eye 3 will not
disappoints, it is as frightening and original as the first
one. Let us hope that Hollywood would not ruin this one as
it did with the first one. The Eye three is rated PG-13 for
frightening and disturbing content.
