REVIEW: THE FOOT FIST WAY

09/22/08

SYNOPSIS:
Self-control, courtesy,
perseverance, integrity and an indomitable spirit – those
are the basic tenets preached by the proud but stern Master
instructor Simmons at the Concord Tae Kwon Do Studio. There
“the way of the foot and the fist,” a.k.a. the definition of
the featured Korean martial art, turns boys into black belts
and suburbanites into great warriors. That is, until
Simmons’ seemingly perfect life starts collapsing when he
discovers his wife having an affair on him. Twice. A chance
to resurrect his life by battling his hero - the 8-time
undefeated champ and star of the “Seven Rings of Pain”
trilogy, Chuck “The Truck” Wallace - gives Simmons’ life
purpose as he winds up on a wild, comic journey that will
take him from egomaniacal bluster all the way to becoming
the stand-up man of his delusional dreams.
REVIEW: The Foot Fist Way is a 2006 film shoot just
in 19 days with a really small credit card budget. The film features the debut of Jody Hill as writer,
director and producer. The Foot Fist Way became a sensation
at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, But it was back in May
30, 2008 in a limited release that we were able to see this
film in theaters. Now five months later Paramount Home
Entertainment will be releasing one of this year's original comedies
on DVD September 23, 2008.
The film is being promote
as "the best thing since of its kind since Napoleon Dynamite" and probably
the promoters are right on the money. Like it happened with
"Napoleon Dynamite", you either loved it or hated. Jody Hill
make used of that dark comedy that can be ridiculous and
grotesque for
some people, with a couple of "I can believe people
laugh at this " reactions from some other viewers. However
some people will find "The Foot Fist Way" extremely funny
and for sure it will find its audience.
The success of this film is
mainly for the idea and originality created by Jody Hills.
He just made use of all of his creativity to deliver a
comedy that caught the attention of many people including
Will Ferrell and Adam Mckay. However it is the performance
by Danny R. McBride as Fred Simmons that steals the show in
this movie.
Overall I found The Foot
Fist Way very entertaining and funny, which force me to
watch "Napoleon Dynamite" again, since I was one of those
who hated it.
