REVIEW: THE LUCKY ONES
01/25/09

From the director of The
Illusionist, The Lucky Ones, starring Rachel McAdams (The
Notebook) with Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins (Mystic
River, 2004) and Michael Peña (Crash), is the humorous, yet
gripping drama about three soldiers on leave who take an
unexpected road trip across the United States. An Official
Selection of the 2008 Toronto Film Festival, The Lucky Ones
was called “Spellbinding” by Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
and “a sharply observed, smart road movie” (Joe Neumaier,
New York Daily News) with “sharp, heartfelt performances”
(Philadelphia Inquirer). The DVD contains a making-of
featurette and will be available on January 27, 2009.
After suffering an injury during a routine patrol, hardened
sergeant TK Poole (Peña) is granted a one-month leave to
visit his fiancé. However, when an unexpected blackout
cancels all flights out of New York, TK agrees to share a
ride to Pittsburgh with two similarly stranded servicemen,
Cheever (Robbins), an older family man who longs to return
to his wife in St. Louis, and Colee (McAdams), a naive
private who’s pinned her hopes on connecting with a dead
fellow soldier’s family. What begins as a short trip
unexpectedly evolves into a longer journey. Forced to
grapple with old relationships, broken hopes and a country
divided over the war, TK, Cheever and Colee discover that
home is not quite what they remembered and that the unlikely
companionship they’ve found might be what matters the most.
