REVIEW: THE TEN

01/12/08

SYNOPSIS:
David Wain and Ken Marino ("Wet Hot American Summer", "The
State") team-up to create a laugh-out-loud comedy with an
all-star cast! The Ten is comprised of ten overlapping
stories, each inspired by one of the Ten Commandments: A
thief (Winona Ryder) falls in love with a ventriloquist's
puppet, a guy (Adam Brody) becomes an accidental hero after
falling out of a plane, a detective (Liev Schreiber) covets
his neighbor's CAT-Scan machine, a librarian (Gretchen Mol)
has a sexual awakening in Mexico with a sexy local handyman
(Justin Theroux), a doctor (Ken Marino) kills his patient
"as a goof," a mother (Kerri Kenney-Silver) hires an Arnold
Schwarzenegger impersonator (Oliver Platt) to be a father
figure to her children; a prisoner (Rob Corddry) lusts after
his fellow inmate's "wife." All these stories are presented
by Jeff Reigert (Paul Rudd), who is faced with his own moral
dilemma – having to choose between his wife (Famke Janssen)
and his mistress (Jessica Alba).
REVIEW: From one of the masters of
comedy comes "The Ten" a film directed by David Wain known
for his movie "Wet Hot American Summer" It was
released back in August 2007, the film received mixed
reviews by the critics and its limited release by Thinkfilm
was not enough to recover the $5.2 millions dollars expended
in the making of this film, since it only collected $766
thousand dollars at the box office.
After watching this film,
it was surprising to see that many of the nation's top
critics actually liked it From my perspective, I
enjoyed the movie, but it is not a must see. Furthermore, it
is the kind of film that can be enjoyed on those afternoon
when you have a group of friends around and you decided to
put a movie while chatting. In other words, it is not so
important to follow the plot, because there is no plot. The
film is just a collection of ten sketches representing
each of the ten commandments.
This movie plays very
similar to "The Darwin Awards" movie no plot good short
stories, but "The Ten" is full of dark and sarcastic comedy
and it may be offensive to some people, so be aware.
The cast selected by David
Wain was probably the key for the film to keep the movie
interesting. Paul Rudd, Jessica Alba, Olive Platt, everybody
did an excellent job in their short stories. It was funny to
see Winona Ryder with her "shall not steal" story.
This was clever and hilarious.
Overall "The Ten" is a
funny film but loses its value due to the lack of a good
plot.
The DVD contains the usual,
audio commentary, interviews with the cast, a short making
of (only five minutes) and the first episode of "Wainy
Days". If you really enjoy the movie, probably you want to
watch the over 55 minutes of alternate takes and deleted
scene featurette.
