REVIEW: The Tripper

10/21/07

David Arquettte came up
with the concept for The Tripper when he was eighteen years
old and finally wrote the screenplay with Joe Harris
(Darkness Falls, Tooth Fairy) in 2004. The movie is a mix of
old school slasher thrown together with some political
satire. The Tripper marks the directorial debut of David
Arquette in a movie that doesn’t quiet knows what it wants
to be, but does manage to be mildly entertaining.
In The Tripper a group of hippies head to a rural Northern
California town for the first annual American Free Love
Festival hosted by Frank Baker (Paul Reubens). Among the
hippies are Samantha (Jaime King) who is trying to find
comfort in Ivan (Lukas Haas) after leaving an abusive
relationship that ended after a bad acid-trip. Joey (Jason
Mewes aka Jay from Clerks) play a hippie pot-head and
provides the comedy relief. When the hippies start dying,
the local sheriff, Buzz Hall ( Thomas Jane), shuts down the
event. However when the highways become filled with traffic,
a lot of the hippies decided to stay and take their chances
with the Ronald Regan obsessed killer who wears a Regan mask
and carries an axe.
The Tripper is a movie that tries to cover too much ground.
It’s as if Arquette wanted to create something new but it
got lost somewhere in the writing when he was coming up with
all the clever ways to re-invent the slasher genre. The
flick even dares to ineptly take a stab at our current
political situation. A movie like this could have struck
gold, but it misses one to many times. However, the movie is
not awful and as a first time director Arquette shows some
potential. The performance by Thomas Jane was pretty good.
Paul Reubens hilariously reinvents the delivery of the
F-word and Jason Mewes delivered some pretty funny lines.
Horror fans will find the gore and slaughter scenes
semi-exciting. As a Halloween flick to watch with friends
this movie may find its audience.
