DVD REVIEW:
THE TUDORS
(THE
COMPLETE FIRST SEASON)
12/31/07
Intrigue, passion, power,
jealousy mixed together and you have one of the most
exciting stories in history. Showtime has taken the life of
Henry VIII and put it into a one of a kind series in “The
Tudors”. In this first season, we see the early beginnings
of young Henry VIII, (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) eager to
establish his sovereign over England and become the most
powerful man in Europe. The first episode is full of facts
and quite complex but is nicely put to set the ground for
the rest of the story. Henry VIII is trying to make
allegiances with France, a threatening enemy, by sponsoring
a “Treaty of Universal Peace” . Guided by the manipulative,
ambitious and unpopular Lord Chancellor, Cardinal Wolsey
(Sam Neill), Henry is trying to handle not only his
international affairs but also his domestic problems. Being
married to Katherine of Aragon (Maria Doyle Kennedy),
Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain’s daughter, has not been
easy as she was the wife of his late brother and has not
been able to give him a male heir to the throne. Henry is
troubled by the status of his marriage and begins to invite
the ladies of the house to his bedroom with whom he has
passionate, and playful sex. These scenes come up through
the rest of the season and while they spice things up they
are quite explicit. What is left to see is Henry’s seduction
and romance to Ann Boylen (Natalie Domer), a conspiracy
within his court, and his separation from the Catholic
Church are only a few of the exciting events of this fist
season.
A parade of conflicting events with settings, costumes,
music and a script that could not have been better written
to tell this magnificent true story, is what makes “The
Tudors“ an intelligent and entertaining television series.
In addition the performance by Jonathan Rhys Meyers is
astonishing, and the supporting cast Sam Neill, Calum Blue,
Henry Cavill, Natalie Dormer, and Maria Doyle Kennedy are at
their best. To those of us who love history and for those
who just want to be entertained, you will not regret having
this two disc DVD with the complete first season of this
Golden Globe nominated television series. Some of the
features of this DVD include an inside look at the
production, costume design, locations in London plus other

The Tudors Season 1

A very none realistic, none historical
made-up series for Showtime TV. I was
totally disappointed from the history
that I have read and studied. "The Other
Boleyn girl " recently released was a
bit better, but not completely accurate,
but just a bit more so than the lousy
TUDOR series. Perhaps next time around.
The old movie's from the mid-60's were
better. |
