REVIEW: TOP GUN
(HD)

09/30/07

Remember back in the 80s
how you rode your bike with your friend and you guys called
each other Maverick and Goose. That other kid from the other
side of the block was Iceman, but he never knew. Remember,
how you would attach a tape recorder to your bike and play
the Top Gun soundtrack while pretending to be in a life or
death dog-fight. Now, don’t try to denies this. I know you
and all this started after watching a movie called Top Gun,
currently at number 132 on the list of top grossing movies
of all time. Top Gun is a movie that has more confidence
than any male needs and an unabashed patriotism
representative of its time. This month Paramount is
re-releasing, Top Gun in HD-DVD and it looks stupendous.
In Top Gun director Tony Scott (Man on Fire, Deja Vu)
chooses naval pilots to showcase the testosterone laced ego
driven alpha male of the 80s. Maverick (Tom Cruise) and
Goose (Anthony Edwards) are best friends, among the top one
percent of naval pilot, selected to participate in an elicit
flying school called Top Gun. Maverick falls for one of his
instructors, Charlie (Kelly McGillis), and faces-off head to
head with fellow classmate Iceman (Val Kilmer), while
dealing with a tragic incident.
The aerial combat scenes in Top Gun are amazing and in high
definition they look awesome. The plot may be a little
cheesy, but Maverick’s cockiness is so other the top that
you can't help but be entertained. Tom really does a good job
bringing Maverick to life. The always amazing Val Kilmer
goes a nice job as Maverick’s nemesis, but he doesn’t get
enough screen time.
The soundtrack, a classic in its own right, is pretty good.
It really does a good job building up the energy of the
film. The look of the movie in high definition is amazing.
The colors are vivid and not washed out like the version
shown on TV. Top Gun oozes a confidence that probably
couldn’t be done right nowadays, but in the 80s this movie
was just want audiences wanted.
