Eyes Wide Shut

Eyes Wide Shut: Friday, July 16, 1999

The last movie directed by Stanley Kubrick was the critically acclaimed Full Metal Jacket. Twelve years later, comes Kubrick's last and final movie: Eyes Wide Shut. Like most of Kubrick's films, this one took two years to shoot with some scenes requiring more than sixty takes. Eyes Wide Shut stars Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Tom Cruise plays Dr. Bill Harford who after learning of his wife's flirtatious behavior, goes on an odyssey of his own. Here odyssey means sex-capade. No wonder JT Anderson was so looking forward to this movie. I think it's just gloried porn, but what do I know. The only thing I can say is that Stanley Kubrick has never made a bad movie. So, look forward to Eyes Wide Shut overtaking American Pie this week, as the older, intellectual crowd invades the theaters.

I finally had the chance to see "EYES WIDE SHUT" when it came out on video.
I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised.  I had heard so many negative
comments on this movie that I was prepared for the worst.  Tom Cruise can
play any role and be positively convincing, as he is in this movie.  Nicole
Kidman seems drugged at times, but she tells a good story about her desire
for the Naval officer.  Anyone that has been in love, and who has a jealous
streak, should understand the shock and the anger that Bill (Tom Cruise)
feels when his wife tells him that she would have given up everything
(including him and their daughter) for the Naval officer.  This film is not
about sex, not about an orgy (although there is one going on in a major
scene), but is about obsession.  The obsession here is that Bill is looking
for a one night stand to get revenge on his wife, even though she didn't
really cheat on him - except in her thoughts.  The film succeeds in so many
ways.  It is mildly reminiscent of an old Martin Scorcese film "After Hours,"
in that Bill goes through a series of wild experiences over a two night
period.  This movie was long, but never boring.  I will definitely purchase
this movie, and enjoy watching it again.
