REVIEW: FOOL'S GOLD

02/07/08

Back in 2003
Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson had a big hit with the
movie “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”. In that movie the
chemistry worked and the joke weren’t half bad. Trying to
capitalize on the success, the two are back in the romantic
adventure movie Fool’s Gold.
Fool’s Gold begins with Ben Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey)
underwater looking for clues to an 18th century Queen's
Dowry (40 chests of priceless treasure that was lost at sea
in 1715). Ben doesn’t have a job and is obsess with finding
the treasure. This has caused his wife Tess Finnegan (Kate
Hudson) to file for divorce. A divorce that is about to take
place that same day. After the divorce is finalized, Ben
tries to convince Tess to come with him because he has just
found a big clue that will lead to the treasure. Tess was
once as obsess with the treasure as Ben, but after so many
years she feels she has just wasted her time with him. Tess
leaves for her job on the Yacht Precious Gem.
Accidentally Ben ends up on the Precious Gem owned by Donald
Sutherland (Nigel Honeycutt), whose British accent is at
time more pronounce than others. On the Yacht, Ben and Tess
convince Nigel to help them look for the treasure. However,
a rapper by the name of Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart) who Ben owes
money to is also after the treasure and has Ben’s mentor Moe
Fitch (Ray Winstone) on the hunt.
Marketed as a romantic adventure movie, the adventure takes
a while to get going. Whenever the pace of the movie does
start to pick-up, something always seem to stop it dead on
its tracks. Only towards the end of the movie do things
really pick-up. There were some funny scenes that worked,
but not enough. The funniest scenes were between a gay
couple that are cooks on the Precious Gem. This couple had
more chemistry that Ben and Tess did. It’s perplexing that
they couldn’t capture the chemistry they had in “How to Lose
a Guy in 10 Days“.
The performances by Matthew and Kate were tolerable while
Ray Winstone was good, but his character didn’t have enough
to do. I had a hard time believing that Kevin Hart, who
looks like a Kanye West look-alike, could hurt a fly. From
his casting, I thought the bad guys in this movie would be
more lighthearted, but at one point the bad guys kick it up
a notch leading to a far more violent movie that expected.
While the movie is not great it still managed to be mildly
entertaining and it has its moments, but don’t go in
expecting another “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days“.
