The Gift: Friday January  19, 2001

 Good-hearted Annie Wilson, who bears "the gift" of psychic vision, is a recently widowed mother of three young boys in the rural town of Brixton, Georgia. Scorned by some of the narrow-minded town citizens, Annie struggles to support herself and her sons by giving psychic readings to a few of the members of this small community. Annie advises one of them, Valerie, to leave her husband Donnie, a macho town bully. Her visions begin to unravel the town’s dark secrets, and she finds herself in increasing danger as the drowned body of a woman is found. Her "gift" becomes her only hope to save herself and her family. -- © Paramount Classics

 The People's Review of The Gift

Ryan
score = 50
An average film.  With the limited budget, writer Billy Bob Thorton came through and delivered a very suspenseful film that I guarantee has scenes that will make many jump from their seats, as well as some mild twists that people may not see coming.  Cate Blanchett's starring role is overshadowed by the smaller characters of Greg Kinnear, Giovani Ribsi, and Keanu Reeves.  The "reading" scenes become a bit redundant throughout the film, but on a whole, this movie is worth seeing, especially on rental.  Guys will want to see it for Katie Holmes, if anything.
