Very good,a tad to long,The Shawshank still has it beat. But the acting could not be better, the actor who played John Cohffy stole the movie I think.

The green mile is far underrated. This is the single greatest motion picture I have ever seen. John Coffey was a memorable character whose way of life should be expressed in everyone's lives. The roles of Coffey, Billy the Kid, Percy, and even Mr. Jangles are memorable, Oscar caliber performances.

I believe the Green Mile was the best movie that I had ever seen.  It really made me think.  I told everyone that I know to go and see it.  As far as the critics, they wouldn't know a good movie if it kicked them in the butt!!!

Great movie! The weight of the movie was awesome and three hours passed by just like the fast-paced Titanic, without being a drag. It exposed one of the rarely explored facets of life by blending the different participants, focusing on life from different perspectives, in a forceful manner. Tom Hanks, David Morse (my Saint Elsewhere hero!), Michael Clarke Duncan, "Percy", all the other inmates and the rest of the cast did a near-real job! Not to forget Mr. Jingles!! The supernatural aura added a new dimension to the movie from a philosophical point of view. It was not only intellectually stimulating but also satiates one's craving for humane touch in a moviedom dominated by violence, sex, and light entertainment stuff. I won't be surprised if its entire cast win 4/5 or even more Oscars for their titanic efforts in making it so real and emotionally choking. I haven't seen Shawshank Redemption but I have a feeling it will outperform that movie when it comes to winning awards.I highly recommend this movie to those who wish to find real-life substance in a movie.

This was a very moving peace of Art.There should be more movies like this, where God & Miracles are the focus, instead of violence, sex and killings.Maybe because it's nearing y2k.But what ever the reason,I am glad it's JESUS !!!!

How could anyone find fault with the miraculous beauty of this film? The nature of man, both the beautiful and beastly, is explored, deplored, and celebrated in this masterwork. In the theatre where I saw it (Corte Madera, CA)not a word was spoken, or a whisper heard until the final scenes, when the only audible noise was sniffing and sobbing.  Beautiful.

Ever since The Shawshank Redemption, I have been a huge Stephen King fan.  I never had the "discipline" to read The Green Mile series, but after seeing it, I just don't care.  As the film progresses, the world around you slips away until you're drowned in the action and story.  Regardless of who you are, this film is going to tap into some part of your life and is going to yank so hard at your emotions that you almost won't be able to breathe.  I, as well as my two close friends, were having trouble walking and speaking afterward. The Green Mile will put your life into such a perspective, relying on your own terms as you have related them to the story, and you will think about this movie almost every day for the rest of your life, guaranteed.

It takes a patient and emotionally intelligent person to appreciate the messages of this film.  I, just a meager student, give this movie the highest review.  I recommend to anyone reading any reviews of this movie before seeing it to disregard totally any negative comments.  My life has been affected greatly because of The Green Mile.

Greetings, This film is A MUST SEE, for various reasons. An excellent story line. Great actors. An inspirational message, including a reminder of where we are. How fragile and how soon it may be over. If you have not seen it, do take the 3 hours and 8 minutes to watch it.

Stephen King did a great job with the series.  The movie is a "must see." Michael Clarke Duncan give an outstanding performance as John Coffey. I think he out performs the brilliant Tom Hanks.  The film is truly outstanding. The three hours and eight minutes are worth it. Bring a full bag of popcorn, a small soda, and an empty bladder.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. So much beautiful, sorrowful, emotion. There is nothing to critize about this movie.  If you don't enjoy this movie, you need to check out your inner soul to see if you are still alive.  See it at the theater to get the full impact.

I think you really have to understand the true meaning of the movie to appreciate it and it is obvious that Ebert, USA Today, Mr. Showbiz, and Herald did not really understand it's meaning. The message that we All should live in the shoes of John Coffey and to see what he sees in his fellow man should be the stronghold of our existance.  When there is love there is healing.

Tom Hanks, Stephen King, How can you fail.  The bladder infection sub-plot was very well done.  I believe Tom Hanks has been there.  If he has not, it is the best acting job he has ever done.  I would have ended the movie at the shot of the gate at the mental hospital.  I believe that was the fitting end of the picture.

The movies works on so many levels but outstanding is the work of the actors in the character roles.  Michael Jeter, a face from comic television, creates a character which transcends dialogue.  He speaks with the suggestion of a Louisiana French accent that often is not easily understood but his face, body movement and the eyes create a person with a soul and a passion that is so remarkable it is stunning.  it is stunning in the sense of stopping the viewer in the middle of a thought.  In this film he is accompanied by a plethora of outstanding performances.  If Michael were doing a one man performance it would generate intense plaudits.  In the assemble he is the golden link.  I loved the movie and applaud all.  Michael Jeter is my new number one guy.

I was emotionally TOUCHED by this film; the best movie I have ever seen in my life... I have appreciated once again the value of true faith, love, and loyalty among true friends and among good-natured people... I also believe that evil exists and it does come to an end sooner than later! Further, I was able to reflect upon my own spiritual life and see it from a new perspective; faith grows stronger everyday... I know it can! The film made me believe in miracles once again; I will probably watch this movie many more times... I would also like to reflect MANY MORE TIMES about how important is to maintain hope and patience throughout the hardships of my life. On the other hand, this movie is NOT for everyone; I highly recommend it to those who take life seriously and who enjoy BEING for others in a spiritual way...

Check it out!  It was a great movie that really makes one think about prison life and the people behind the bars and those that maybe should be. Those that live in society that are just as cold as those kept under key!  But with most Stephen King movies in the end each gets what is coming to them in a twisted different kind of way!  Well worth the money!

Not being a fan of long movies, I must say I truely enjoyed this film.Once again showing that Stephen King is not just a horror author. In fact his best work in my opinion is non-horror based stories, none of us can forget shawshank, but what about my personal favorite, underated "Stand By Me".What I liked best about this movie was that none of the actors overshadowes each other. solid performances all around. i highly recomend this movie, however dont get the jumbo soda, or you'll wet yourself because you wont want to miss anything.

This was a really great movie but all thru it I had flashbacks to a movie in the 60s or so called the sin eater. John boy walton ( richard Thomas) was in it where they did pretty much what John Coffee did..anyway it was a great movie and I will rent it when it comes out on video for sure.

Its a great movie.  I recommend it to anyone that can handle the gruesome execution scenes.  Its definitely a tear-jerker.  The actor that played John Coffey was outstanding.  Also, the actor that played the sniper in Private Ryan and a bad guy in Enemy of the State did an excellent job in his supporting role.

All of the critics that are giving this movie a low score must not know what quality is. All they're worried about is how long this movie was. Evey minute of the GM was worth it. And for those of you (A. Edwards) need to go and pay money to watch grass grow because that's about as much intelligence as you have.

It's scary when a filmmaker endows in a film over importance by making a three hour epic about a fantasy myth.  This movie is an overblown Twilight Zone episode.  Each character is a black or white depiction of good or evil.  Did I miss something?

One of the best of this year -- should be several Oscar nominations. There were so many good performances that it would be hard to decide who would get the Best Supporting Actor nod. I had read the book(s) and was still moved by the movie (take extra tissues"; the story improves when presented visually.

I thought tht this movie was very well done.  Even thought this was a dark movie about death I thought that it had it's touch of light heartedness at the same time.  I also thought that the relationships between the gaurds was outstanding.  There was a real sence of friendship.  The movie over all was outstanding.  Thank you Frank Darabont, and all the other actors.

The people that gave this movie a 100 score must not get out very much or have been watching Little House On The Prarie reruns straight for the last 15 years.  When not watching re-runs of John Boy on the Waltons.  Smaltzy. The movie has several significant holes in it that they must not have seen or didn't understand.  Like what in hell did they think the guards were going to do at the Wardens house when they went with the prisoner to try and save his wife? Perform their exorcism in his house on his obsenity yelling wife without him even waking up? And why did big Mr.Coffey need to give her mouth to mouth to cure her?  His hands on old Tom Hanks crotch did the trick there...guess it wouldn't look politically correct if Big John sucked the "poison" out of him by dropping on his knees.  Jeez.  And "Billy The Kid" was seemingly doped up and out of it when it was convenient to do so only to snap out of it when the laborously slow plot needed some action.  Big John's dialogue could have used a little less mubbling and more insight...on Billy The Kid.."He's a bad man." Jeez, you think so?  Oh wait, there he goes back to sleep (but ain't he cute in his jammies). And by the way, he's fly shit and you make Arnold Schwartneger look like a girly man so why in hell are you afraid of him?  No matter how bad he is.  And if I was going to the electric chair knowing that I was inocent and that piece of shit was guilty, I wouldn't be afrid of him.  I would be afraid I would kill him with my bare hands to desrve the electric chair.  Pretty weak.  And what does Tom Hanks do with his fellow inmates after they witness a miracle on the mouse and black flies coming out of Big John's mout?  They disregard the miracle and run to see Percy the tell him "nahnah..the mouse still lives."  Seems they missed the point here. This guy can cure cancer and mend broken bones and their first thought was to run to Percy? I started laughing in the movie at that point.  This guy has incredible powers and thier little brains were focusing on Percy's transfer out.  No wonder they were just prison guards....they are too stupid to do anything else. The over done sparks flying and electric lights flashing has been done dozens of times in other movies during "miracles." Nothing new there.  The hold my hand to "see what I see" routine was from a 1966 Star Trek episode with Spock doing his Vulcan mind prob act.  Boring. I did like Tom Hanks' wife and Percy was the glue holding this thing together...altough you knew two minutes after seeing Percy you would have to wait almost 3 hours to see him ge his comeuppance. Best movie you ever saw?....great. Sorry...but I do believe you, you poor thing.

This movie was TERRIBLE!  I can't believe that no one has mentioned how violent and explicit this movie was.  I had to leave the theater following one of the extremely graphic execution scenes, because I was afraid I was going to be physically ill!  That's right, not one, but 2 completed executions, not to mention the humor the movie gives to the "rehersal" of the execution. Absolutely disgraceful.  The worst part was I saw families at this movie! Children being exposed to a movie that I actually saw advertised as "heartwarming" and a great holiday movie.  It was terrible, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, especially no one under 17.  Besides, it was WAY TOO LONG!  No one wants to sit in a theater for 3 hours, wishing the movie they paid $7 would end.  The only reason I give this movie any score at all is because I like Tom Hanks.  Save your money.

Looks like another trend here...again, this site perpetuates the tragedy in america...no mention of the african american(michael duncan)who had a larger role than bonnie hunter or micheal jeter; so that leaves your readers refering to him as "the black guy who plays the role of John Coffey"... certainly hanks deserves top billing in this movie.. but m. duncan deserved at least 2nd in billing...  The movie...was outstanding... a must see

I thought the movie was GREAT! I don't think it deserved to get the average of 75.63. Its definitely a must see. I didn't even want to see it at first because I thought it would be so boring . But it was the total opposite. I'm 13 and usually I don't see movies like that unless there's a hot guy in it. My cousin who's also 13 loved it . And other family members ranging from 19-70 saw it & each one loved it. The guy who played John Coffey was awesome and Tom Hanks was remarkable. Practically all of the women in the theater were crying including me. I think this movie deserves an Oscar & the actors in it. he movie touched my heart in many ways. Saying this is pretty deep for a 13-year -old .

This movie is definitely worth seeing!  The movie is a wonderfully "theme woven" story full of good actors playing interesting characters. The movie is long and sometimes "drawn out."  However, the three hours is needed to help develop characters that the audience can relate to and understand.  I will admit that the movie has some minor plot flaws, but the ideas presented throughout the film makes up for this fact in more than one way.  Not everything is what it seems, and this movie definitely proves that a book can't be judged by its cover.

I don't really like long movies, but my girlfriend tricked me into seeing this one AFTER we got to the theater. Best trick she ever played on me because the movie was great! I normally like quick action movies but this emotional roller coaster of a movie was very touching, we both stayed up half the night, unable to sleep. I'm a little disturbed by the lack of recognition for the actor that played Coffey, he was the emotional center of the movie and without his great acting the movie would have had less impact. All the actors were great though. Whoever gave this movie a low rating should have their head examined, and check to see if they still have a pulse. I'm sure they have personal problems and can't see past that. Unfortunately, Tom Hanks will get all the Oscar credit and M. Duncan (Coffey) will be relegated to a much lesser role due to his race. The "color" reality of this world is much scarier than any movie.

This movie is a very able adaptation of the Christ figure metaphor that is found in so much of latter-day literature.  The character John Coffey (J.C., ie, Jesus Christ)is portrayed as a man whose words no one understands ("I couldn't help it; I couldn't take it back."),  having the ability to heal (as he did Melinda Morse, M.M., ie Mary Magdaline), but also to exact justice ( as he did with Percy and Wild Bill) and see into the heart.  He was able to provide absolution to Paul (yet another biblical allusion), and for all his self-confessed ignorance he knew what to tell Paul to say to "God the Father" on his judgement day.  As John was watching the movie he requested to see as his last wish, the light from the projector was positioned so as to provide a halo. These allusions were obvious, and they force the thoughtful observer to confront issues of eternity, just as the enigmatic John Coffey forced Paul Edgecomb to do.  A powerful offering of a classic theme.

The Green Mile is a nice simple long long movie where the characters are either really really nice, really really good, really really misjudged, or really really horrid. Like any good old cowboy movie from the 40's it doesn't challenge anyone's idea of what is right and what is wrong. Delightfully, JCoffey's talents are multifaceted, complex and developed through the stratosphere; not only does he preform miracles and wring out  innocence, he does hair and makeup

Seldom does a movie do justice to a book like this one does.  The casting and attention to detail of the time in which the story is set are superb. I thought the Green Mile was a excellent movie I am not really a Stephen King fan because his movie's are usually a little to scary for me. However I liked this movie because it showed a side of human beings that is good and bad and how one gentle giant tried to correct as much evil in the world that he could with his special power. I thought Coffey should have been recognized as one of the main stars in the movie he was excellent.

The book was absolutley incredible.  I couldn't put it down.  I cried, more like sobbed, like a baby.  This was the first Stephen King novel I have read and I must admit I was pleasantly surprised.  I had to take a break from reading just to bury my head in my pillow and cry.  I have never felt such a rush of emotion in all my 30 years.  A big fat thumb up for Tom Hanks, I loved him as Paul Edgecomb. (Not as much as Forrest though)  The book and the movie gave me an overwhelming spiritual flood, I can't wait to read it again.  Mr. King if you're out there, "DO IT AGAIN".

Watching this movie was just a delight to my soul.  I am a guy that doesnt cry in movies all that often.  i had tears in my eyes at the end of "Saving Private Ryan" but then again i am only 19.  My dad and Bro-in-law cried along with several other hundreds of people, but this movie, "The Green Mile" honestly made me cry.  I had to ask the person next to me for some Kleenex, and was constantly wiping my eyes.  The performance by Michael Clarke Duncan was outstanding.  He portrayed his part as 'John Coffey' perfectly.  He has you feeling as he does by the end of the movie. You want Tom Hanks character to let him go so he doesnt have to be executed but then you hear the reasoning behind him not wanting to run away and you completely understand why.  He definitely deserves a nomination for the Academy Awards.  I enjoyed this movie and will probably end up seeing it again.  I will definitely purchase 'The Green Mile' when it comes to video.

This was truely a wonderful movie and a "must-see". I rips at every emotion possible and makes you feel them to the fullest extent. I laughed, cried, swore, and cried some more. My friends and I left the theater talking about it on Saturday, and were still talking about it the next Tuesday. It's one of those movies that just makes you happy to be alive and greatful for every one of God's blessings. Go see it, you'll feel just about the same way.

To sit and watch a movie that held my intrest and heart for that long period of time, and not even know that three hours had passed. And to have tears in my eyes at the end of the movie, I just don't cry at any thing it is the best movie I have seen in along time

There are not enough adjectives in the dictionary to properly do justice to this film. It is one of the most wonderful, enthralling, and magnificent films I have ever seen or experienced. The depth and richness of the characters and story were so emotionally moving to me as to almost defy description. The performances of the cast, especially Tom Hanks and particularly Michael Clarke Duncan, are without compare. If you haven't seen this film yet, please do so. It is an absolute masterpiece. Bravo to Frank Darabont and the entire cast for such an exceptional, awe-inspiring work! If this film does not completely sweep the Oscars, then there is truly no justice in this world. And, for those very tiny-minded and tiny-hearted people who panned this film--you have my sympathy. Perhaps one day you will mature enough to understand.....perhaps.

Powerful...that is the word that came to my mind as the movie ended...proving, once again, that Stephen King is capable of delivering more than bizarre stories and horrific characters. In several ways, The Green Mile was much like The Shawshank Redemption: strong, sympathetic leading characters exhibiting more than surface interpretations of who they are.  The Green Mile, while not without its portrayal of evil and cruelty (Wild Bill and Percy), also shows the noble side of human nature, exhibited in the caring of the four other prison guards and how they treated the death-row inmates...with compassion, with respect for their human dignity, with kindness.  Of course, the role of John Coffey was masterfully portrayed.  In fact, all the acting in this film was exceptional, making the three-hour length hardly seem that long, so engrossing was the story and so believable the characters.  Certainly, The Green Mile was one of the best movies of the year.

Interesting version of the crucifixion in modern times...a commentary on how we might not recognize Jesus, even if He walked among us today...

This is a movie about power. The power of the guards, the power of John Coffey and the power of God.  If you want to feel the "power", go see this movie.  Take a friend and some tissues.

loved the book and loved the movie.......to Curt S who wrote a lengthy trashing of the movie and people who liked this movie --- maybe your should spend a little more time reading.....you might actually be able to figure out the plots and messages (willing to bet he had to use Cliff Notes and never actually read a book in its entirity)

I really enjoyed the spirital meaning of The Green mile. It really makes you think that their really is a equalibrium between good and evil. And that one with out the other is to no avail. Its amazeing how the god of our understanding has given us the abilty to make chioces and the chioces that we make determines another altimate decision by yet another choice by a higer power on ones final distiny.

Wonderful movie. It's sad that reviewers such as  "Curt S" missed the whole point of the picture. Curt is exactly the kind of person (world) that John Coffeys' character is tired of fighting (full of hate and anger). Curt goes on and on filling the reader with his own form of mindless tripe, I guess he felt he was going to see a documentary. What a looser!! If you liked Shawshank Redemption and Forrest Gump this movie has a mix of both. See the movie and enjoy!

the only reason i didnt rate this movie is because there is no number low enough. This movie was a piece of crap. it was horrible. i fell like i am one of the only inteligent people who watched this thing. The expect you to just disregard the little inconsistancies, like that there is no plot. Tom Hanks the death row prison guard with a heart of gold. more accuratly..." Andy Griffith and Don Knotts play the role of death row prison guards. Oh look aunt B baked you some cornbread, Oh now Ottis  let himself out again." The best actor was mr Jengals. Dont waste your time.

This is the best movie that I have ever seen. I loved everything about it. It's funny, sad and exciting all wrapped up in one. The cast for this film is out of this world. My fav. is Mr. Coffey. I really liked him as Pappa Bear in Armaggedon.(oh well that's spelt wrong I think) He is a wonderful actor. Can you say OSCAR?

This is one of the best film adaptations from a Steven King novel ever - and I love all of Steven King's work. I, like everyone else I saw leaving the theatre, cried from sadness, relief, outrage, and other emotions I can't even identify. I hope this wins best picture. I never go to see a movie in the theatre twice, but won't bat an eye at sitting through this 3 hour flick again.

An amazing film which exceded all my prior expectations. Tom Hanks turned in a great performance, dependable as usual, while Michael Clarke Duncan was thoroughly touching in the role of John Coffey. I personally felt that Doug Hutchison, whom I had never seen before, stole the film with his wickedly wonderful portrayal of Percy Wetmore. His talent and timing were absolutely superb, one of the most convincing performances I've seen in a long time. Percy could easily have been portrayed as a stereo-typical villian, but in me, Hutchison's performance simultaneously evoked hatred, disgust and sheer pity for the character. Hutchison is definitely an actor on the rise, and I wish him all the best with his future endeavours.

This was a really excellent movie, well worth the 3 hour investment of time. The entire cast was great; Michael Clarke Duncan's Oscar nomination was well-deserved, but in truth any one of the actors could have earned one. They were that good. The story itself was pretty straightforward, but there were enough surprises to keep both my wife and me riveted. We were engrossed the entire time. If you have not already seen The Green Mile, do it.

brilliantly performed from Hanks, michael clark duncan, and doug hutchinson. I pride myself on being quite cold hearted when in comes to 'weepy' films, but the green mile made my cry all the way through reaching a climactic nose blow at the end. Well done, two thumbs up.

this movie is definitely a good movie. It is one of the best movies I've seen thus far recently. I too was skeptical of this movie because I think it was poorly advertised. But boy did it trick me. This movie is definitely one that will surface alot of emontions, and the majority will be teary eyed when leaving the theatre.

I have to agree with the majority of the other reviewers. This was a really excellent movie. Although the film was quite long there was never a moment when I thought "Get on with it!" The presence the actor brought to the John Coffie role was huge in every sense of the word. Isn't he big!!! The full horror of the use of OLD SPARKY was brought home but you can almost agree with the death penalty when someone committed the crimes perpetrated by Billy the Kid. Go and see ityou won't be disappointed.

This movie definately opened the eyes of many I knew. It was somewhat of a depiction of what happened during the Depression to people with the Death Penalty. I would say that I give my second thoughts to the Death Penalty because some of the accused in jail might not be guilty as charged. Anyway, I  believe that The Green Mile IS Oscar worthy. In my opinion, Michael Clarke Duncan truly deserves the award for Best Supporting Actor. I wish that Tom Hanks was nominated because he drove such a spectacular performance. This movie had me crying, I should say.

best movie this year .It`s really awesome!!! not so good as the book but you must see it !!!the cast did a great job with that movie. I saw it two times and i could see it one more time again. tom hanks was so brilliant in his part as the prison guard paul Edgecombe. I was so touched that I cried the whole time. the most touching scene was the death of John Coffey and I couldn`t stop crying.

The only reason why you weirdo film critics would grade this movie so low is because it didn't have that dark, screwed-up view of the world that "American Beauty'' had, which must be the exact way life in Hollywood must be ... "The Green Mile'' should have won the Oscar because it was without doubt the best movie of the year, and the actor who played John Coffey should have gotten every vote for Best Supporting Actor ... the reason it didn't win and he didn't win is the exact same reason our country and society are so screwed up today ... a grade of 75 ... what a joke

This film was one of the most beautiful film I've ever seen. It's very emetional and it addresses our soul, those who saw this film will be against execution.I think the actors in the film have performed their roles perfectly as if they faced it in their ture life also I understood that the love and goodness is over everything. While I was watching the film many people left the saloon due to the execution views. In my view the end of people should not be like that.I hope that the death penalty will be lift up in all countries.thank you...

This movie is worth getting nominated for best movie of the year. After reading most of the comments other people made I found out that some people really hated it. I would like to say to them that didn't you know that this movie is baised on a novel by Steven King? Some people are like, "Well that was already used in other movies." Like the sparks that come out of the light bulbs. And one person is questioning: why did the gaurds go to the Warden House and not expect to wake-up Mr. Warden (well I'm so sure that they knew he would wake-up, and I beleive they were prepared for it), why did John have to touch Paul's crotch, and why does John have to give Mrs. Warden mouth to mouth to cure her? I also didn't like how one person said it wasn't beleivable. Since when do all movies have to be beleivable. My answer to all of the stupid comments and questions above is: BECAUSE that's what happens IN THE BOOK. (That is if you were intelegent enough to know it was a novel.) If you have a problem with it I suggest you talk to Steven King. I suggest to you people to read it; you might acually learn something that you thought you knew about but you acually didn't. Also some people didn't know it is rated R. Maybe you should of seen why it's rated R. I think people were thinging a little too much durring the movie, and were not seeing the whole story. Because it's all there. This movie deserves a higher score than 100. I recommend it to anyone who is MATURE enough, are not squirmish durring eletric chair execusions, and who can enjoy one of the best movies of the year. Also, don't be dissing Steven King; probably the best and most recognized novelest of our time.

A great story propels this well acted and moving movie. The characters, although not very complex manage to play their parts well and the movie is beautifully crafted and tied up at the end. The ending, however was quite depressing, leaving me nearly in tears.
