REVIEW: ICE AGE 3: DAWN OF THE
DINOSAURS

06/30/09

Family. What exactly does that
mean to you? A Dad, Mom, some kids maybe? If you are a fan of
the Ice Age movies, then you know that a family is much more
than just that. Manny, Ellie, Sid and Diego are back, but
this time things are much more settled, or at least that’s
what one would think. Manny (Ray Romano) and Ellie (Queen
Latifah) are expecting their first bundle of joy and the
preparations don’t always seem to include everyone. Manny is
the ever nervous expectant Dad while Ellie is the picture of
calm. In each of the two previous installments there seemed
to be a migration towards a different era. In the first one
they were preparing themselves for the ice age and on route,
came across one another. In part two, the ice begins to melt
and their migration takes them to a land closer to the
climate they are accustomed to and pleasantly Manny finds
love with the large yet lovely Ellie.
In Dawn of the Dinosaurs the herd seems to be settled and
that’s just how they’d like it to stay. Diego (Dennis Leary)
is starting to feel that he doesn’t fit in to the whole
domesticity thing and as a brave, natural hunter is feeling
out of place in all of these baby preparations, not to
mention that he is not as spry as he used to be. Sid (John
Leguizamo), well, Sid is himself. Clumsy, smelly and
inappropriate, whilst all the while desperately wanting to
have a family of his own. Just when all is comfy cozy and the
only thing missing is the arrival of Ellie’s baby, the
adventure begins.
Sid accidentally (is there any other way for Sid, but
accidental?) finds three eggs alone in an underground cavern
and decides that this is how he will begin his new family.
When his three little angels come into the world, well, lets
just say they are of the carnivore sort and veggies are just
not gonna do, parenthood gets complicated. Then a T-Rex comes
calling and it quickly becomes quite obvious that these
babies belong to her. Through Sid’s protestations that he can
raise these babies himself, Momma Rex takes not only the
babies but Sid to her underground world in search of a more
acceptable nursery, or should I say lava falls. Thus the rest
of the herd finds themselves in the adventure of their lives
in search of Sid. In the process they come across beauty,
danger and more adventure than you can shake a stick at all
the while being guided by a strange yet riley one-eyed weasel
named Buck (Simon Pegg). You know, sometimes, even against
your better judgment you just have to follow the funky little
guy with moxy, even though you have a strong sense he isn’t
playing with all his marbles (well, at least that’s what I
would do).
Buck is an adventurer if I’ve ever seen one, although at
times he seems just a wee bit over confident. In some ways I
guess he’s a prehistoric superhero with a few loose screws,
but he was both of my son’s favorite character in this film.
This installment of the Ice Age was the most action packed I
think of all three and there is a little bit of everything to
be enjoyed by all. In the end the entire herd finds that
family is what you make of it and that whom ever you are, be
it a clumsy crazy uncle, or a strong and brave hunter or just
a big woolly lug of a guy, you have a place in the herd after
all. If you are like me (or CineMarcos) and you like to stay
for the ending credits, you will be pleasantly surprised to
find that John Leguizamo’s and Ray Romano’s kids lent their
voices to this project, thus truly making this a family
affair.
