REVIEW: MISS MARCH
03/12/09
SYNOPSIS: MISS MARCH tells the story of a young man
(Zach Cregger, THE WHITEST KIDS U’ KNOW) who awakens from a
four-year coma to hear that his once virginal high-school
sweetheart (Raquel Alessi) has since become a naked
centerfold in PLAYBOY MAGAZINE. He and his sex-crazed best
friend (Trevor Moore, THE WHITEST KIDS U’ KNOW) decide to
take a cross- country road trip in order to crash a party at
the magazine’s legendary headquarters and win back the girl.
REVIEW: “Yuck!
Gross! Oh man, that was nasty!” That isn’t a quote from the
movie, it’s a quote from lil’ ol’ me. Yeap, it’s that kind
of movie. There were a few pretty good gross-out moments,
plenty of juvenile humor, testosterone-filled scenarios,
stupidity, and hot women. Put it all together and it was a
least a little fun. But as far as movies of this category,
this one falls at about average; not bad but not great
either. I was fortunate to have my brother in town and
accompany me to this screening. If you have read my other
reviews then you might know of my brother’s condition of not
being able to breath due to strong laughter. Well, there
were a couple of moments when he couldn’t breathe, so as far
as my brother goes, this was a really funny movie. So it
can’t be that bad, right? I would summarize it best as some
weak, lame scenes intertwined with some potentially classic
comedic moments that kept you tuned in. Considering the lack
of star power, the performances were not too bad. You might
recognize some of them but there aren’t any really big
names, except for Mr. Hefner of course. The interesting
thing though is that Trevor Moore, who plays Tucker Cleigh,
reminded me of a young Jim Carrey, kinda sorta, and Zach
Cregger, who plays Eugene Bell, reminded me of a young Ryan
Reynolds, kinda sorta. They both did pretty well in their
lead roles. Raquel Alessi plays Cindi Whitehall, Eugene’s
girlfriend, and she is the main hotness factor of the movie.
Craig Robinson does deliver and yet another sharp supporting
performance and you’ve got to check out his character’s
nickname (I’d rather not list it here so as not to offend).
The film starts out as another typical story. Two childhood
best buddies who develop their sexual interests at an early
age; one is crazed, one is reserved. The story jumps quickly
to high school with the pervert having no luck with girls at
all and the other one having a girlfriend with whom he has
reached a mutual agreement to remain celibate. But then
comes prom night and the question arises . . . sex or
celibacy? This is where the movie takes an interesting turn
but then lands right back into a typical backdrop by the
mission of reaching and entering the Playboy Mansion.
Generally speaking, the characters are quite typical as
well. There is nothing extraordinarily special or unique
about any of them. The script, like the movie, has its
childish, silly moments along with some fresh, funny zingers
that will make you laugh hard. But wait a tick, even though
the cake is not that great, the icing is really special. The
icing of this cake is that those lead actors, Zach Cregger
and Trevor Moore, not only wrote the screenplay but also
directed this, their first major motion picture. Hey, not
bad for some twenty-something year olds. So if you like this
typical type of movie, you can give it a shot.
