ROCKETMAN

5/31/2019

SYNOPSIS:
ROCKETMAN is an epic musical fantasy about the incredible human
story of Elton John’s breakthrough years. The film follows the
fantastical journey of transformation from shy piano prodigy
Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John. This
inspirational story – set to Elton John’s most beloved songs and
performed by star Taron Egerton – tells the universally
relatable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most
iconic figures in pop culture. ROCKETMAN also stars Jamie Bell
as Elton’s longtime lyricist and writing partner Bernie Taupin,
Richard Madden as Elton’s first manager, John Reid, and Bryce
Dallas Howard as Elton’s mother Sheila Farebrother.
REVIEW: When
you hear the title of this film, well you would think it’s
either a space movie or a film about Elton John, but I would
have to say it’s much more than that. Its really a story about
friendship. Lifelong friendship at that. In my personal opinion,
Elton John is the most iconic Artist of all time. Try arguing
with me and I promise you wont win. But the thing is, there
would be no Elton John without Bernie Taupin. And so, this film
is really about love. In the words of Taupin himself, “Our
relationship has always been something that I don’t think
anybody can truly define… I don’t think anybody will ever
understand it 100 percent, no matter what is said or done or
shown or presented… but I think it’s quite extraordinary.”
If you enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody, I believe you will also
enjoy Rocketman. But, where Bohemian Rhapsody was a bio pic with
lots of music, this is a true musical. As Cine Marcos said,
although he preferred Bohemian Rhapsody, Taron Egerton as Elton
John blew Rami Malek out of the water. Yes, this is a musical
but it beautifully tells Elton John’s life story warts and all.
When the film begins, you might think you’ve just been
privy to someone’s psychedelic acid trip. We find Elton dropping
into a therapy session, big red sequined wings and all! But you
wouldn’t expect anything less flamboyant from him. He takes us
to the very beginning, when he was just Reggie Dwight, a little
boy who just needed love. Reggie was painfully shy but what many
may not know is that he was a musical prodigy. Eventually, he
answered an ad soliciting songwriters at the very same time that
his future lifetime writing partner Bernie did and as luck would
have it, they were paired without even meeting. When the two
finally did meet, they became immediate friends and music
history was made.
This movie will take you through the
ups and many downs of Elton’s life via the amazing songs that
these two wrote together through their 50 years of
collaboration. Like Freddy Mercury, Elton fell into the call of
drugs, sex and rock n roll and was taken advantage of by those
he thought loved him but we are blessed that in the end, he not
only survived but thrived and is still making amazing music.
Cine Marcos, was saying that we will probably see an Elvis
and or a Michael Jackson movie next. The difference is that we
still have this great icon around to tell the story. The cast is
amazing. I was very surprised and pleased with Bryce Dallas
Howard’s performance as Elton’s mother Sheila. Who knew she
could do a middle-class British accent so well? Richard Madden
did an amazing job playing John Reid, Elton’s one-time lover and
business manager. So much so that I hated him by the end of the
film. Jamie Bell as Bernie Taupin, was as you would imagine,
great. You truly felt that genuine love and lifelong brotherhood
that Elton and Bernie share to this day through his performance.
If you are a fan of musicals, this is a modern-day beauty. If
you love Elton John as much as I do (I know all his songs by
heart), you have to see this film. It’s a life told through song
and that alone makes this movie original and enjoyable.
