The Next Best Thing: Friday  March 03, 2000

Abbie and Robert (Madonna and Rupert Everett) are best friends with so much in common - a joyful, unconventional approach to life; quick wit and intelligence; an endearing impulsiveness... and miserable luck in love. They would make the perfect couple, but one thing prevents them from looking to each other for romance - Robert is gay. A day comes, however, when too many cocktails and a twist of fate takes them to a new level of intimacy... and turns them into parents. A whole new world has opened up for them, and for the sake of Sam, their child (played by newcomer Malcolm Stumpf), Abbie and Robert decide to live together as a family. Theirs may not be the perfect family - but it is the next best thing -- © Paramount Pictures

Madonna did an more than OK preformance in this movie, and Rupert was wonderfull in this "romantic" drama. The plot was great and the movie-music was incredibel!!!

I think this movie is good. Critics still seem to be hung up on her accent and her persona. And that's the root of their criticism. They obviously didn't go into the movie with an open mind, they had preconceived notions to begin with. (See USA Today's review; So obvious the second-rate reviewer is jealous of M) It's too easy to criticize her for her acting, then to criticize the buttons she has pushed over the years, because that wouldn't be politically correct. This movie is definitely a must-see for Madonna fans, but it also has universal appeal.

What really amazes me is that it AMAZES critics that Madonna is not the best actress in the world!!  She's not...I can say that...and I'm the biggest Madonna fan!  But that's all the critics can say.  I think the general audience knows this too.  But who cares? She's Madonna!!! I went to this movie on Friday after reading the reviews.  And I almost DIDN'T go.  I was really upset by all the reviews and I believed them.  I really enjoyed the movie.  It's not the best picture of the year.  It's a very light film.  It's funny, touching, sad, and a bit serious.  Personally, I thought the movie could have been a bit longer.  It WAS 2 hours, but it flew by.  I couldn't believe it was over.  The last part of the movie (the serious part) seemed under-done.  It's like they got scared to go too deep.  But nonetheless, just go see this for yourself.  The critics beating this movie up is absolutely wrong!!!

WELL I LIKED THE PLOT BUT IT WAS TOO LONG FOR MY LIKING.  I THOUGHT IT GOOD HAVE HAD A BETTER DIALOGUE AND WE COULD HAVE GOTTEN TO KNOW THE CHARACTERS A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

50% comedy- 95%bad acting We are supposed to believe in this couple?  It is all contrived; not a believeable moment in the movie. Everett is not even remotely likeable and comes across more as a hypocrite and a less than attentive father.  This roll is not a strech for either of the leads.  However, atleast Madonna is somewhat likeable. Overall, the film is not worth the time, or the money.  Go rent 'the object of my affection,' instead.

Well, maybe the director's been feeling ill or something... While this movie did have its occasional moments, it suffered from nagging little flaws like, say, a horrible script full of contrived dialogue, and terrible directing. I think all the actors are capable of much better work, but neither the script or the director seemed the slightest bit interested in providing the viewing public with anything remotely resembling actual human beings. The cinematography was bland and clicheed, and even the parts that were supposed to be shocking seemed perfectly ordinary. If you're willing to ignore this movie's many superficialities, then it's possible to get a little enjoyment out of it, but if you decide to risk it I would definitely recommend seeing it on video rather than wasting the admission price at the theatre.
