REVIEW: Once

06/10/07

This Guy can compose and
sing a great song for you and fix your Hoover too! The Guy,
Glen Hansard (lead-singer of The Frames), works in his Dad’s
vacuum cleaner repair shop. Every other waking moment is
spent on his passion: music. Playing his worn out old guitar
with holes, he is a diamond in the rough waiting for his big
break. Although his drive is shaken by an ugly break up from
his love interest, a different girl. The Girl, Marketa
Irglova comes along
and recognizes his talent being a musical talent herself.
She re-awakens his spirit and they inspire each other to
march onward.
Music is truly one of the greatest art forms known to
humanity. Writer/Director John Carney, who has a musical
background as well, wanted to bring this art to the screen
surrounding a modern yet simple love story. Well, he
accomplished what he set out to do . . . a modern-day
musical. Thus, this movie is for music lovers, others need
not apply. This is more like an album sized music
video than a movie. I was hoping for a little bit more
movie. The actors’ performances were as their characters,
director, dialogue, and story line required: simple.
Many times, simple can be more real. Both Glen and
Marketa Irglova did a good job at that, considering their
limited acting experience. They were so well cast, it’s
almost biographical. The characters were endearing and
approachable. I wanted to give them all a hug. I struggled
to understand them from time
to time though. Irish and Eastern European accents at the
same time will keep you on your toes.
The movie looked a bit dull. Except for a couple of nature
shots, it wasn’t very visually stimulating. Some of the many
wide angle shots should have been facial close ups. I wanted
to see more face of the appealing main characters. After
all, that is where life exists. Now as far as sound . . .
wow! The music in this movie is as powerful as in Moulin
Rouge and Chicago. The movie is nothing without it. This is
probably why I left
thinking about getting the soundtrack . . . the movie DVD,
not so much.

If you have a love for music go see this
one, atleast, "Once"- Ha! It will give
you goosebumps & you will be tapping
your feet along with the music.
I absolutely loved it.
The only minus, is that it is hard to
understand the words at times. It does
force you to watch closely, but that was
O.K. |

What a breath of fresh air. I saw this
movie not knowing anything about it
beforehand and left the theatre
absolutley floored. Forget Harry Potter
and Transformers see a real movie this
summer see Once. You will not be
dissapointed. |

Spectacular movie in its simplicity. The
whole point of the movie appears to have
been missed by Cine Marcos. Clearly
he/she needs to stick to reviewing
movies that are less challenging as
regards cinematography, music and
emotional intelligence- maybe Diehard 4
is more their genre.
A must see for people wanting real
cinema. For those wanting bubble gum
for the eyes maybe go to movies Cine
Marcos rates more highly. |

I agree with Anonymous on this one, this
is one of the most real, amazing movies
I've ever seen. It's as romantic as life
gets, especially for a musician. I am a
musician so I got the benefit from that
aspect of the film as well, since the
soundtrack is absolutely gorgeous and
the song "Falling Slowly" still gets me
all teary after listening to it a
hundred times over. The movie is very
sad at the same time, and so simple but
so powerful. I'm extremely impressed and
I'm going to see it again soon. :) |

A wonderful movie. I am a musician and
this movie hit home for me. The love of
music that they share is amazing. I have
the soundtrack now and I can't get
enough of it. I listen over and over and
now I have been singing and playing
these songs with my guitar and piano.
Top 10 movies all time for me. |

from the first song that was performed(a
van morrison's) till the last one, i was
just captivated by the sincerity of the
movie. It was so believable as if it was
not a movie. the music was unbelievably
great. I did not know that the movie got
nominated for oscar in the song and
album category. only after buying the
soundtrack then i realised it.
