REVIEW: PINEAPPLE EXPRESS
08/01/08
SYNOPSIS:
Lazy stoner Dale Denton (Seth Rogen) has only one reason to
visit his equally lazy dealer Saul Silver (James Franco): to
purchase weed, specifically, a rare new strain called
Pineapple Express. But when Dale becomes the only witness to
a murder by a crooked cop (Rosie Perez) and the city's most
dangerous drug lord (Gary Cole), he panics and dumps his
roach of Pineapple Express at the scene. Dale now has
another reason to visit Saul: to find out if the weed is so
rare that it can be traced back to him. And it is. As Dale
and Saul run for their lives, they quickly discover that
they're not suffering from weed-fueled paranoia; incredibly,
the bad guys really are hot on their trail and trying to
figure out the fastest way to kill them both. All aboard the
Pineapple Express.
REVIEW: Pineapple
Express seemed to me like it was going to be another movie
about young men meddling with drugs and the goofy mishaps
associated with their perils. Much to my dismay, this movie
directed by David Gordon Green, starring Seth Rogen and
James Franco was a quite witty, dare I say, thriller crime
flick with a fun twist; albeit, a very large, almost far
fetched twist. James Franco does a phenomenal job as a
perpetually intoxicated drug dealer-a far reach from his
villainous persona in Spiderman, but very effective
nonetheless. Seth Rogen plays a role much like all the
others he’s played (Knocked up, Superbad…) but it proves
effective since it seems to be his niche. Franco definitely
steals the movie with funny, sometimes profound, random
one-liners. The story follows a lazy young stoner, Dale
Denton (Rogen), who witnesses a murder by a crooked cop and
a powerful drug lord. He then seeks out his drug dealer,
Saul Silver (Franco) in a manner connected to the title of
the film and in turn both are forced on the most
exhilarating adventure of their lives. Pineapple Express
seems like a series of stories intertwined together to form
a whole big picture. It is not necessarily about getting
high, but the effects marijuana has on the guys and their
ability to function wisely. At times, the movie was sort of
an edge-of-your-seat thriller, while at others so far
fetched that you remember you are watching a comedy.
Pineapple Express is seriously a funny paradigm of emotions,
events and ideas. This movie was funny, thrilling, and quite
enjoyable.
