The People's Review of Romeo Must Die

Why do we go to the movies? Because Hollywood gives us a temporary escape
route away from reality, and Romeo Must Die is about as far away as we can
get. What a brilliant movie!!! The fight scenes, especially between Kai
(anyone else think Russell Wong is THE finest piece of man to walk the
earth???) and Han were so exciting and absolutely brilliant, the chemistry
between Trish and Han wasn't obvious but clear...this movie definitely
ranks among one of my all time favourites!

beau couple et jouent à merveille !

comments = Sweet movie! There were some flaws in it like the part
when Jet was fightin' Maurice's boyz where he jumps kicks like 4 people
and then jumps off the floor beam to kick 4 more guys... THat
definitely coulda been cleaner, but besides that, an awesome movie!
If u like Jet Li, try to get a hold of his older kung fu movies that were
released in Hong kong and China... those have tons of more action than the
American movies he's done.

I think the movie was great! It had alot of action in it. I
think that Aalyah did pretty good for her first movie with action in it.
I love her and I love the movie. DMX, they should of had him doing
more than what he just did. It was too soon for him to get shot in
the movie. Overall, the movie was really great and I would recommend
people to see it.

Great action movie! Can't wait to see more of Jet Li in the future!
I don't care what Roger Ebert or the Herald think, I'm sure that most of
the movies that they rate highly would bore me to tears! Romeo must
die was FANTASTIC! I expect even better flicks starring Jet Li in
the near future. I know that I, among many others, will definitely
be on the lookout for them!

I really liked this movie, normally I don't care bout acting performance
unless its really bad, but I found this movie awesome, lots of action, but
still not enough. i also liked the ex-ray vision thing when someone broke
a bone or something.

I saw one of the PRemiers and It was full of action and great fighting
scenes. Jet Li is a great martial artist and I would love to see him in a
movie with jackie chan, AAlyah was great, showed very good acting skills,
DMX wasn't shown enough in the film and died too easy. BUt the story line
was good, the acting was good and the action was good, also the casting
was great. I would recomend it to everyone.

I THOUGHT THE MOVE WAS AWSOME!!! IT HAD GOOD ACTORS BUT IT COULD HAVE SOME
MORE ACTION. THE MOVIE WAS BOTH FUNNY AND ADVENTUROUS. IT WAS JUST ALL
THAT!!!! IT IS DEFFENITALLY WORTH SEEING.

Since first seeing Jet Li in Lethal Weapon 4, I was extremely excited
about seeing him in this, RMD, his second US film. The ballet of martial
arts as performed by Mr. Li is a must see.Mr. Li has a very strong prsence
as an actor as well as a martial artists. However, in this installment his
fight senes seemed very fast past with the execution of his moves. It was
not always easy to catch the flow and rhythm of his craft. He's too
exciting to watch to loose this very important dynamic as seen in LW4. I
liked the special effects ala Matrix. The best part were when Mr. Li did
his his thing. Using Trish to fight another women because he couldn't was
great. Someone in the audience screamed out "Rewind." I actually
was glad that this story was not beseiged with alot of sexual
visualization. The scene in the bar at the beginning with the 2 Asian
women dancing I could have done without.Of course I'm not your target
demographic. Come on guys, this scene definetly was male fantasy and
voyeurism. As a women of color (African American), I think it's important,
no vital that you don't fall into the same trap of objectifying W of C
aswhite women have become and in this case, Asian women. Show us some
respect.I'm curious about how Asian women felt with this display. The
chemistry between Trish and Han was innocent yet obvious that there was an
attraction.I got the impression that they had feelings for one another
that hadn't been explored. I think it made complete sense that they hugged
instead of kissed after Han's father had just committed suicide. They even
work well together in the music video. Check it out.I think the young
R&B singer playing Trish did a good job her first time out. She was
sassy, independent and strong. She didn't cringe during the fight scene
against the woman on the motorcycle. She stepped up to the plate. The rest
of the cast did a fantastic job. Maurice was the comic relief and Mack and
Kai added the right touch as traitors. The best scene was the football
game. I viewed this movie i! n Jersey City Friday night in a predominately
African American movie house. Folks loved seeing DMX. Some also had some
issue with him being killed off. I also appreciated the fact that there
was not alot of racial slurs used in this film. The "N" word was
not used once by anybody.Profanity is a daily occurence in most of our
lives and it wasn't to over done.Or I just have gotten numb to it. Maurice
referring to Han as Dim Sun was not overly stated. Not implying that there
is not racism between these cultures, but you didn't go over board with
racial references.I would see this movie a second time. Any chance for a
part two?

After i first saw Jet Li in Lethal Weapon 4 i knew i would have to see
this movie. RMD is packed wall to wall with some of the best martial
arts scenes i've ever seen. Li is also a talented actor. Not
to outshine the job done by his co-star Aalyah. i would recomend it
to anyone who asked, after i see it again. The movie also had a
couple cute comic parts.

This was a great movie that definitely keeps the audience's attention.
It is worth the price of admission and then some
CRITIC CHICK! score = None comments = Romeo Must Die was
an 65 on a scale of 100 and this is why:
1. It was difficult to understand what Jet Li was saying sometimes (I'm
not sure if he had lots of input on the script but I don't think he was
always comfortable with the dialogue). It seems like he mumbled some of the
words.
2. Action alone does not make a movie. Although Jet Li is one
hell of an action movie guy, he still has to develop his acting skills in
other areas. Cuteness alone doesn't cut it.(Don't get mad, I'm just
telling like it is!!!!)
3. The title is misleading. There was no passionate romantic
connection between the two main characters. It was more of a friendship.
Is hollywood still afraid of the race issue in a movie that was supposed
to transcend race????
4. The movie had wholes in the plot bigger than Texas. I can't
believe Han just drops Trish off at her store, shows up at her house
later, announces he is "Han not Akbar", and she starts hanging
out with him.
Come on, it's the 90s and she DOESN't not him. (No matter how cute he
is...) In short, the movie could have been better developed. Although
Aaliyah looked great and Jet Li was awesome with his martial arts skills,
both of them should have had a better script to work with...
P.S. When I pay my $8.00 for the 7:30 p.m. movie, I want my money's worth
in action AND STORYLINE! Don't go primetime - see the matinee!!!!

This film does not deserve a 43 out of 100 as the critics have it, not
even close that low. It doesn't deserve a perfect score, but it does
deserve a high one. This is a people's film, and the people will enjoy it.
If you're the age of 40 or 50 (like many critics) you probably will think
it's only OK. But if you're in the 30's or under, this film is highly
recommended for a great time.

I haven't had this much fun watching a movie in years. This movie defines
action. I'm sorry to say that American action flicks are losing our
American interests but they are. Thank god for Jet Li and crew.

The movie was great. The movie was worth seeing. I only wish
there was a better ending. I also like to see DMX played a bigger
role in the movie. This movie may not win any grammies, but was worth
seeing. We fans are looking forward to see Jet Li and other casts in
the near future.

This is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Now, it is my personally
favorite. I've always been a fan of martial arts and special effects. This
movie have everything for everyone. Action, martial arts, drama a bit of
romance, and a bit of comedy. I've seen this movie twice and I can't wait
to see it again. I've never felt this way about a movie before. Romeo Must
Die is a unique, must-see movie!

anybody who said that "Romeo Must Die" is not worth seeing.
Then I say to these people that they don't know what a good movie is
because in all my life in America this is the ONLY I seen more than one
time...I went to see "Romeo Must Die" SEVEN times already, yet
I'm going again tomorrow (4/5/00). This movie is the best that American
ever produced...

Okay, folks. Just how often do you agree with Ebert for God sakes! This
was a GREAT action film that simply isn't getting its props because
mainstream America hasn't gotten much exposure to Hong Kong style action.
The acting is great! Especially when considering that Jet Li doesn't
really speak English. Russel Wong is the perfect baddie (as always),
and Aaliya is worth the price of the ticket herself. Though I think
it could've use 1 or 2 more action scenes, the ones in the film are
outstanding! Not to say that there is no action, mind you. And not
the typical kung fu movie, either. I've already seen it twice! Definately
a good FILM!!!

martial artist and I judged the movie on his fighting, acting and how well
coordinated the movie was and is. He is a great fighter and a great
martial arts actor...GO JET

"Romeo Must Die" is really a great movie! The action
sequences, cast, settings were excellent! The only problem was that
the storyline was a bit shallow.. didn't explore too much about the
title... but it's still a good movie to watch! I think Jet improved
a LOT in this movie.. compared to "Lethal Weapon 4", Jet was
able to say A LOT more lines and his acting skills expanded in a lot of
ways.. the way he talked, the tone, and the attitude when he went to the
bar with Aaliyah. Just one word: EXCELLENT! ^_^

I THINK ROMEO MUST DIE IS A REAL GOOD MOVIE BECAUSE IT IS BASED ON THE
REAL DEAL. ROMEO AND JULIET IS JUST THE SAME AS JET LI AND AALYIAH IN THIS
MOVIE. THEY INTERACT THEY'RE OWN STYLE WITH WHAT REALLY WENT ON IN THE
ROMEO AND JULIET MOVIE, WHICH IN A WAY I CAN REALLY RELATE TO.I GIVE IT A
REAL BIG RATING BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH EFFORT PEOPLE PUT INTO SOMETHING LIKE
THIS TO UPDATE THE ACTION,SETTINGS,FAMILY TIES,AND THE OTHER THINGS THAT
COME TO MIND WHEN THE BOOKS,MOVIES,TAPES,AND PLAYS ARE BEING PUT TOGETHER.

Compared to most recent "martial arts"/action movies, the
fighting sequences are not too bad. But for those who are familiar
w/ Jet Li's HK movies, this movie totally understated his capability.
The amateurish special effects only worked to over-shadowed his natural
ability. Watch his: "once upon time in China- pts 1-4",
"swordsman II", etc.. and you'll know what the differences are.

Amazing choreography of martial arts. The fighting scenes are
incredible! It's better than all the Jacky Chang movies put together! It's
"a must see" I'd recommend this movie to anyone.. Jet Li,
Russell Wong, and Aaliyah, were all amazing in the movie. The guy
that played Aaliyah's father, is also very talented in the movie...I give
this movie a score of 100%....

everything was crapping cool! the best movie ever! All the martial arts
were so realistic...as if this was mortal combat! jet li had a lot
of courage speaking english! it was funny too! it was cool to see
Aaliyah..her part as Trish definitely fits her. DMX was cool too, but he
should of said more lines. Russell Wong was definitely the BOMB! he should
be the next James Bond! Overall everyone did a great job...especially the
director, it took a lot of courage and faith to do this movie. Can't wait
to get the dvd!

Critic’s Corner: Well, for one thing, nobody’s name is Romeo in this
movie. The name Romeo (from Romeo & Juliet) represents a tragic hero,
which is represented by Jet Li in this movie. The movie was very exciting,
had a good story and was very enjoyable to watch. The action scenes were
immensely awesome. I really liked this movie due to the cool music, nice
action, and great story. Excellent viewing. This movie had some great
violent action scenes, and hopefully, people wont try these stunts at
home. The movie had enough action scenes portrayed in the previews to get
a lot of people to see it. The story was well crafted, taking tidbits from
Romeo and Juliet, which, blended with action, is well made.
