REVIEW: THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE

08/13/09

SYNOPSIS:
Clare (Rachel McAdams) has been in love with Henry (Eric
Bana) her entire life. She believes they are destined to be
together, even though she never knows when they will be
separated: Henry is a time traveler--cursed with a rare
genetic anomaly that causes him to live his life on a
shifting timeline, skipping back and forth through the years
with no control. Despite the fact that Henry's travels force
them apart with no warning, and never knowing when they will
be reunited, Clare desperately tries to build a life with
her one true love.
REVIEW: The first
question that came to my mind prior to seeing The Time
Traveler’s Wife was “Is this going to be similar to The
Notebook?”. One cannot help but compare this film to The
Notebook due to its impressive theatrical trailer and the
adored cast member. Yes, I am referring to Allie, I mean
Rachel McAdams.
In my opinion, the opinion of a 30 year old male, that is
the number one flaw that the movie has. After seeing the
trailer, expectations are set to a very high and demanding
level which not too many romantic films can achieve. So to
answer the aforementioned question, this is not the Notebook
nor does it even come close. On the other hand, it is an
enjoyable movie where the characters do a good job in
portraying their characters. Note: I have not read the book;
therefore, my review is based solely on the movie and not
the transition from book to film. The Time Traveler’s Wife
did keep me interested throughout its development, yet I was
yearning for more the entire way. Is it a tear jerker? It
has several sad moments but none that would qualify it as
being a tear jerker. Eric Bana, the time traveler, did a
good job as the lead role, yet I feel the script didn’t
allow him, nor the rest of the characters, to develop a deep
emotional connection. Nor did the film develop a connection
between the two as she was growing up. Maybe this would have
added a more sentimental aspect to the film. As for Rachel,
she was exceptional in every way as usual.
To sum things up, The Time Traveler’s Wife was a decent
movie that may or may not be worth seeing at the theatre. It
all depends on how high your romantic scales are set to. I
think that the storyline, along with its cast, presented a
lot of potential to make this film a flick to remember.
Unfortunately, it did not reach its full potential. In all
honesty, I would recommend 500 Days of Summer instead.
Note: This review is biased due to extremely high
expectations and the hope of seeing another Noah and Allie
tale unfold. If you enter the theatre without expectations,
you may come out rating this flick a bit higher. But hey…I
demand a lot from a “chick flick”.
