I thought that this movie was superb for a sequel.  The constant laughter that went on throughout the movie grabbing not only the kids attention, but captured adults as well.

I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel to the original.  With the introduction of the new characters the plot takes a nice twist and keeps you entertained throughout most of the movie.  Irony is still the main ingredient that keeps adults entertained.  The animation is truly superb.  In one scene it was hard to tell if Al (al's toy barn) was human or animated!  A top value for your dollar.

A cute, funny movie.  I laughed louder than the kids.  Disney scores again!

Definitely a "must see" for children and adults of all ages. Leaving the theater you could hear the excited babble of children, but also many adult voices echoing "excellent movie."

I am surprised by the media's apparently unqualified adulation of Toy Story 2.  In my opinion, it is a film which pervasively exploits a child's deep anxiety of being separated from parents, and, unlike classic children's literature, does nothing to resolve those anxieties.  Rather, it magnifies them.

(Consider Woody's sadness at being left behind when Andy leaves for camp; and Jessie's song about being permanently abandoned by her caretaker: "when somebody loved me, everything was beautiful . . . ." Moreover, the movie portrays as normal a relationship of enmity and deception between parent and child.  The mother, for example, sends her child off to camp for an extended period and, while he is gone, and without his knowledge, rummages through his room and sells his toys.  Note also that the toys' caretakers are exceedingly rough and callous with them, throwing them aside like one imagines an abusive drunk parent might do with a child. There is, of course, an element of dark humor in this, but parents should question whether such sadistic ideas are appropriate for small children. There are many other aspects of the film that are decidedly not suitable for small children.  The villain in the film, Zurg represents a clever parody of Darth Vader in Star Wars.  In a climactic battle with Buzz, the Buzz exclaims, "you killed my father!"   "I am your father," Zurg reples. "Prepare to die." Buzz prevails, however, and Zurg plunges to what would have been his death, were he not a toy. An adult and older children may find the foregoing sequence amusing.  But to a small child, not mature enough to understand parody, and perhaps unfamilar with Star Wars and Oedipus Rex, the exchange must be confusing at best. Suddenly, out of the blue, the child is confronted with the following disturbing ideas: (1) the hero's father has been murdered; (2) the hero's father is the villain; (3) the father desires to murder is son; (4) the son kills his father.  It seems unwise to assume that such conflicting, emotionally-charged concepts do not uspset or even overwhelm a trusting young soul, who has been placed in front of the big screen with a promise of innocent fun. There are also a number of scenes involving dread (e.g., Woody's terrifying nightmare in which he is thrown into a trash can, then pulled into a smothering abyss by a heap of broken dolls) and brutality (e.g., a pickax-weilding villain). Many of the characters in Toy Story 2 are undeniably adorable.  But if the film contains images and ideas that are harful to small children, the characters' innate appeal becomes part of the problem.  The film becomes, in other words, a work of seduction. Like virtually every Disney film, Toy Story 2 displays Disney's irrepressible antipathy towards children and family.  Yet the company continues to hold itself out as a wholesome family entertainer, and parents continue to accept it as such. Like Snow White, many who were raised on Disney apparently cannot see past the luster of a poison apple.  By thoughtlessly taking their children to such seductive films and setting them in front of the home video, parents are treating their kids much like the children in Toy Story 2 treat their animated toys--like inanimate objects. Very well done. Parents will enjoy this as much as the kids. This is a pure escapist movie, don't try to read too much into it.
