The Virgin Suicides: Friday April 28, 2000

In an ordinary suburban house, on a lovely tree-lined street, in the middle of 1970s America, lived the five beautiful, dreamy Lisbon sisters, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. What happened to the Lisbon sisters is a tale at once darkly funny and deeply poignant, a story of love and repression, fantasy and terror, sex and death, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable, life-altering secrets of American adolescence.
Based on Jeffrey Eugenides’ acclaimed novel, The Virgin Suicides is a dark, grown-up fairy tale carved out of the funny-sad fabric of suburban teenhood. The film is written and directed by Sofia Coppola, who makes her feature film directorial debut. © 2000 Lion Gate Films

The People's Review of Virgin Suicides

Ok, so the movie had good actors. It also had a sort of haunting, suburban setting going.  And the title really pulled me in.  But that was it.  I for one did not understand the point of the movie.  I was left feeling as though i had wasted 2 hours and for what? Maybe this movie was enjoyable for some people who had a good understanding of it.  But for me, well lets just say I could have been doing more productive things.  I think a 30 is even a little generous for this film.

In this Goth-goofy take, director E. Elias Merhige really revamps cinematic history when he envisions what it was like on the set of F.W. Murnau's 1922 horror classic, Nosferatu. Here, the legendary Murnau (an eccentric John Malkovich, natch) makes a Faustian deal with the devil--or in this case a vampire--and employs real bloodsucker Willem Dafoe as the lead.

I think The Movie The Virgin Suicides Was the best movie I've ever seen it was all a person could it was a mix of drama, horror, sex and humor I think everybody in the movie was great especially Daughters that were played by the talented kirsten Dunst,A.j. cook real beautiful and others i think this movie needs nothing I say about 1 million thumbs up.  I rented it and I am obssesed with it I have the sound track very good songs I love the song Sail Away I even have wall paper of it on my computer and I also am very crazy about it I recorded just voices and songs I hope in 4 to 6 months I'll get the movie that's when it's out in the summer.  I'v been getting depression to not from the  movie but maybe lonelness or I don't but should I talked to someone or just grow out of it or just jump off a roof HAHAHA not just joking but also I got the book too and it says fuck alot I don't know why it that that spanish kid did'nt like g-d and I think that's rude so nexted don't make anything like that negative but other than that it was the bombest movie I ever so and if I can meet A.j. Cook kirsten Dunst it would be cool but that would never happen maybe if I get older I'll go to canada and A.J.'s mom or somthing I would love to go to canada besides that so I give it a 1 million if I could.

I was shocked at how moving this movie actually was. I read the book first and when i heard there was a movie i was a little uncertain. When i read the book,i always thought it was meant to be left to your imagination. What the girls really looked like, their actions, the parents all of that. I thought that was the point; it was supposed to make you think. But, I loved the book so much I decided to give it a try.(plus josh hartnett is in it, i mean can you go wrong?)It was wonderful. Its very haunting and entrancing. When i finished watching it i was sort of beside myself. The whole point is to not really know why the girls actually did what they did in the end, and Sofia Coppola did a very nice job of making sure you didn't really know the girls enough to know why the girls killed themselves. I think the less explained the more impact is left, because for days you're still wondering why, why why? They could have just run away, right? After watching it I was almost scared to go to sleep. The way the girls were portrayed, they were almost sort of ghostly:haunting. All in all, I enjoyed it, it comes highly recommended by me!

I loved the movie it was great.  But i thought that Josh should have been in it more.  And the ending could have been a little better but it was still such a great movie.  It was worth going and seeing it.

The movie had all the proper elements of an entertaining yet thought provoking movie.  Suspence, humor, anticipation, darkness, sexuality... et cetera... what the story lacked was closure.  Maybe that's what was the unique basis of the story, was that it was a mystery to never be solved, by the characters or the audience.  I just feel that the movie lacked a strong point. Ok, so, don't lock your kids up... don't trust adolescent males... don't this or that... but did I have to pay $7.50 for the lesson?  The actresses and actors were superb... but the story was not really astounding.  It's ok entertainment if you've got money to burn and time to spend.

Well done, Sophia! What a debut and what a triumph! Not being American and no longer being a teenager did nothing to hamper my enjoyment of this fascinating and poignant movie which managed to capture all of the seemingly universal truths of growing up. Whether this is specific to the suburbs is debatable but what is beyond a shadow of a doubt is that this film is at the same time hilarious in parts and deeply troubling in others. With the permanent shadow of the girls grisly demises looming over the entire movie it  is fantastic the way we are swept through their last hours and ultimately follow them into and past their final destination. Not since Magnolia earlier this year (and not for a long while before that), have I enjoyed a movie as much as I did this one, and it still amazes me when I look back on the strange disjointed, disembodied, dreamlike state that I found myself in on leaving the cinema. Again, well-done. A Masterpiece!

I went see this movie not long ago and i loved it! most of it had to do with the fact that i really admire the actors and actresses in it but i though it was original and although i already knew the ending before i went watch it, i think it is definitely worth watching!
