REVIEW: WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS
05/08/08
SYNOPSIS:
Two strangers awaken together to discover
they've gotten married following a night of debauchery in
Sin City, and one of them has won a huge jackpot after
playing the other's quarter. The newlyweds devise
ever-escalating schemes to undermine each other and get
their hands on the money - only to find themselves falling
in love amid the mutual backstabbing.
REVIEW: It was only
a matter of time before someone got the bright idea to use
this modern catch phrase as the title of a movie and base a
story around it. So you might wonder what came first the
chicken (the story) or the egg (the title). In either case
the movie was funny and entertaining. It is both a chick
flick and a comedy. The icing on the cake is that the two
main stars, Cameron Diaz as Joy McNally and Ashton Kutcher
as Jack Fuller, are very attractive and help distract the
viewer from noticing some of the movie’s flaws. I’ll also
throw in a Lake Bell as Tipper, Joy’s best friend, as
another distraction. I’m sorry but these two actresses are
just gorgeous. For those of you attracted to the male
gender, Ashton will not disappoint you. Actually, Vegas
doesn’t really play as large a role in the story as you
would imagine. It’s the consequences of what happened in
Vegas that really entertains and where the story really
picks up.
The cinematography aspects of the movie can be summed up
with two words, I mean cities: New York and Vegas. The film
makes standard use of two of this country’s more popular
cities. It also makes standard use of a typical and
predictable plot that is luckily spiced up by Cameron and
Ashton. They do bring some really hilarious moments, some
pretty gross ones too, funny one-liners, and pretty nice
chemistry. They do a great job of demonstrating marriage to
the extreme. They are willing to do anything to get the
upper hand. Some of the supporting cast showed off their
talent as well. Not only is Lake Bell attractive, she’s
pretty funny as well. If Joy’s best friend is funny, you
know that Jack’s best friend, Hater (Rob Corddry), has got
to be right up there also and he is. Rob had some awesome
moments in the movie. Another one of my favorite supporting
actors in this comedy was Dennis Miller as Judge Whopper. He
has incredible line delivery. Speaking of Whopper, some of
these character names are comical on their own. Along with
Whopper, there is Hater, Tipper, Banger (Dennis Farina), and
Dr. Twitchell (Queen Latifah). Yes, all very common names
indeed.
The movie was enjoyable, but it might not be a first choice
when going to the theater these days unless you don’t like
superhero movies or movies based on cartoon classics. I for
one left with a smile on my face. Director Tom Vaughan did a
decent job but a lot of credit has to go to the cast. If you
are a fan of any of them, it might be “worth the watch”.
