ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO

10/30/08

SYNOPSIS:
Lifelong friends and roommates Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri
(Elizabeth Banks) are facing hard times and a mountain of
debt. When the electricity and plumbing get cut off, they
seize upon the idea of making a homegrown porno movie for
some quick cash, enlisting the help of their friends. The
two vow that having sex will not ruin their friendship. But
as filming begins, what started out as a business
proposition between friends turns into something much more.
REVIEW: `Good ol’
fashioned raunchy fun! What else would you expect after
reading the title of this picture? Honestly speaking, I was
looking forward to seeing this movie for the subject matter
and the cast. I was not disappointed. It was a lot of fun to
watch. But it is raunchy and therefore definitely not for
everybody. This follows in the line of comedies such as 40
Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and anything Jay and Silent Bob
related. You’ll see a lot of familiar faces in this movie if
you’ve seen any of these others. You’ll also be treated to
lot of familiar humor along with some new humor and new
stunts that will have you and your jaw rolling on the floor.
There is a moment in this film which broke my personal
record for the most uproarious reaction by a theater
audience that I have ever been present to witness. It was
crazy and it lasted a long time; the audience reaction that
is. To give you an idea, my prior record holder is from
American Wedding (you know the third American Pie movie). A
dog ate the wedding ring that Stiffler was responsible for
safekeeping. He follows the dog forever waiting for it to
dump it out and when it finally does, he grabs the chunk
with the ring with a truffle wrapper. Quickly cutting
through the crowd he bumps into the mother of the bride who
entrusted him with the ring to begin with. She happens to
love truffles and she sees the one he is carrying. Trying to
hide the truth about the ring being eaten by the dog along
with the fact that it really isn’t a truffle, he struggles
to not let her take it from him to the point that he ends up
eating it right before she could get her hands on it. Yeah,
you can imagine the uproar; laughing, commenting, screaming,
it was crazy. Well, this one topped that, no doubt.
Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) are lifelong
friends who live together as roommates. They are broke and
plagued by the simple life. In an act of desperation, they
resort to making a porno in order to make some money. What
they don’t realize is that there is a fine line between sex
and love and their true feelings for each other which are
hidden by the platonic arrangement might surface
unexpectedly. Both Seth and Elizabeth have been very busy
lately. My best first memory of each is from 40 Year Old
Virgin where they both had breakout performances. They are
still going strong and still cranking out laugh fests.
Speaking of laughter, Elizabeth graces us with her unique
naughty laugh which I don’t recall hearing since 40 Year Old
Virgin. I love that laugh. You’ll probably get more attached
to the story, however, than the main characters in this film
because the main characters are not fully developed and the
comedy lies more in the situation. The supporting characters
do add color to the story though. Jason Mewes and Justin
Long, for example, are outlandish. If you thought Justin
Long’s role in the Break Up was shocking, you won’t believe
his role in this one. The script was colorful too and the
one liners were just as potent as the subject matter of this
film. If anyone knows how to push the envelope on the big
screen, it’s Writer/Director Kevin Smith. And believe me,
the envelope was pushed with this motion picture. Keep up
the good work Kevin.
