Yet, in our contemporary lore this mighty black and white mammal is like a two-faced Janus—beloved as a majestic, friendly giant yet infamous for its capacity to kill viciously. Blackfish unravels the complexities of this dichotomy, employing the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who—unlike any orca in the wild—has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. So what exactly went wrong?
Shocking, never before seen footage and riveting interviews with trainers and experts manifest the orca’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity over the last four decades and the growing disillusionment of workers who were misled and endangered by the highly profitable sea-park industry. From New Line Cinema comes a feature film drawn from the case files of married demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. “The Conjuring” stars Academy Award® nominee Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “Orphan”) and Patrick Wilson (“Young Adult,” “Prometheus”) as the Warrens, and Ron Livingston (HBO’s “Band of Brothers”) and Lili Taylor (“Public Enemies”) as Roger and Carolyn Perron, residents of the house.
Joey King (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”), Shanley Caswell (“Detention”), Haley McFarland (TV’s “Lie to Me”), Mackenzie Foy (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”) and newcomer Kyla Deaver play the Perrons’ five daughters, and Sterling Jerins (upcoming “World War Z”) is the Warrens’ little girl, Judy.
James Wan (“Saw,” “Insidious”) directs from a screenplay by Chad Hayes & Carey W. Hayes (“The Reaping”). The film is produced by Peter Safran, Tony DeRosa-Grund and Rob Cowan, with Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter serving as executive producers. Kristen Wiig stars as Imogene, a failed New York playwright awkwardly navigating the transition from Next Big Thing to Last Year’s News. After both her career and relationship hit the skids, she’s forced to make the humiliating move back home to New Jersey with her eccentric mother and younger brother (Annette Bening and Christopher Fitzgerald). Adding further insult to injury, there’s a strange man sleeping in her old bedroom (Darren Criss) and an even stranger man sleeping in her mother’s bed (Matt Dillon). Soon it becomes clear to O’Shea and Nolan that there’s something big out there, and that it’s hungry. It’s time to rally the villagers, arm the troops…and head to the pub.
Julian (Gosling), an American fugitive from justice, runs a boxing club in Bangkok as a front for his drug business.
