Picturehouse has released the official trailer for THE NORTH, the immersive new feature from writer‑director Bart Schrijver (Human Nature) and a recent European Film Awards shortlist contender. The film begins its North American theatrical rollout on October 9. The early event showcases the film with Dolby Vision dual 4K laser projection and Dolby Atmos, heightening the natural textures, environmental detail and atmospheric soundscape captured across the Scottish Highlands.
A JOURNEY ACROSS SCOTLAND
THE NORTH follows two friends in their early thirties—Chris (Bart Harder), a Dutchman, and Lluis (Carles Pulido), a Spaniard—who reunite after a decade apart to take on Scotland’s 330‑mile West Highland Way and Cape Wrath Trail. Their trek unfolds across lush valleys, rugged peaks, unpredictable weather and moments of emotional reckoning. What begins as a long‑awaited reunion becomes a transformative test of endurance, vulnerability and rediscovery.
AN UNCONVENTIONAL PRODUCTION
Schrijver and his small team committed fully to the physical demands of the journey. With no lighting equipment and fewer than six cast and crew on the trail at any time, the production moved like actual hikers—carrying gear, sleeping outdoors and adapting to whatever the Highlands delivered. Scenes were rewritten nightly based on the day’s experiences, allowing the film’s narrative to evolve organically with the terrain, weather and emotional shifts of the trek.
This authenticity extends to the film’s sound design. THE NORTH features no traditional score; instead, it relies entirely on the natural environment—wind, rain, wildlife, footsteps and the ambient hum of the trail. In Dolby Cinema, these elements become enveloping, placing audiences directly alongside Chris and Lluis as they navigate Scotland’s vast and unpredictable landscape.
