A Loose End (Un cabo suelto), the latest feature from acclaimed Uruguayan filmmaker Daniel Hendler, has been selected as Uruguay’s Official Submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards®.
The Uruguay-Argentina-Spain co-production made its world premiere in the Venice Spotlight section of the Venice International Film Festival and previously garnered industry acclaim at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it received the WIP LATAM Industry Award and a Special Jury Mention.
Written and directed by Hendler, the film stars Sergio Prina (The Snatch Thief) and Pilar Gamboa (La Flor) in a genre-blending story that combines elements of dark comedy, westerns, road movies, and police thrillers.
The film follows Santiago (Prina), an Argentine police officer who flees across the border into Uruguay to escape his own colleagues. As he navigates a series of unexpected obstacles and encounters acts of kindness from strangers, he gradually begins building a new life and discovers a fragile sense of belonging. Along the way, he meets Rocío (Gamboa), a woman who may change his future forever.
Blending humor, suspense, and human drama, A Loose End explores themes of identity, reinvention, and the elusive promise of starting over.
