Illumination has unveiled the official trailer for NOT ALONE, the studio’s first entirely original animated feature since Migration. The film arrives exclusively in theaters April 16, 2027.
For nearly two decades, Illumination has introduced audiences to globally beloved characters through franchises such as Despicable Me, Minions, Sing, The Secret Life of Pets, Migration, and the record‑breaking Super Mario Bros. films. NOT ALONE marks a new chapter for the studio, expanding its universe with an original story centered on connection, discovery, and the unexpected visitors who change everything.
In his first feature‑length animated role, Timothée Chalamet stars as Joe, an introverted rocket mechanic living a quiet, solitary life. His routine is upended when he meets Fran, played by Selena Gomez, an astro‑botanist developing the world’s first plant‑fueled rocket.
As Joe and Fran prepare for the rocket’s inaugural launch, sparks fly — though neither is particularly skilled at navigating romance. Their plans take a chaotic turn when three tiny, unruly aliens—Dunk, Welly, and Shirm—hide out in Joe’s home while fleeing a zealous but inept interplanetary officer named Zandro. The aliens believe Fran’s rocket may be their only chance to return home safely.

The film is directed by Eric Guillon, co‑director of Despicable Me 3 and the designer behind Despicable Me and Minions. Guillon is joined by Claire Dodgson (The Lorax, Minions, Despicable Me 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru) and Jonathan Del Val (Minions: The Rise of Gru, The Secret Life of Pets 2).
