Rains Over Babel (Llueve sobre Babel), the acclaimed debut feature from Colombian writer-director Gala del Sol, will make its New York premiere at the Museum of the Moving Image (MoMI) on December 5, 2026, following an exclusive Los Angeles sneak preview at Instituto Cervantes on November 5.
The film has emerged as one of the most celebrated Latin American releases of the year, having been selected as Colombia’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards® and for Spain’s Goya Awards.
A co-production between Colombia, the United States, and Spain, Rains Over Babel was produced by H.A. Hermida, Ana Cristina Gutiérrez, Gala del Sol, Andrés Hermida, and Natalia Rendón Rodríguez.
Beyond its festival success, the film became the highest-grossing Colombian film of 2026 during a remarkable 14-week theatrical run and made history as the first Colombian feature invited to screen at Pixar Animation Studios.
Set in a retro-futuristic, tropical-punk vision of Cali, Colombia, the story unfolds inside Babel, a dive bar that doubles as purgatory. In this neon-soaked liminal world, La Flaca, played by Saray Rebolledo, presides over lost souls desperate for a second chance. Participants gamble years of their lives in an effort to outsmart Death herself.
Over the course of a single transformative night, a collection of misfits embark on surreal journeys. Dante searches for forgotten memories before his contract expires, the ghost Monet races to reclaim his physical body, Timbí and Uma venture into the lower circles of purgatory to rescue loved ones, and Jacob struggles with self-acceptance as he prepares for his first drag performance.
Blending magical realism, mythology, queer storytelling, and punk aesthetics, Rains Over Babel reimagines Cali as the mythical City of Maya, creating an exhilarating portrait of identity, spiritual survival, and redemption.
