Videoart.net is pleased to announce the lineup for the third annual Video Art & Experimental Film Festival (VAEFF), which will take place February 7-9, 2013 at the iconic Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. The three-day festival aims to introduce New York audiences to the most arresting, provocative and conceptually challenging works in time-based media today. Drawing from hundreds of submissions, the festival will feature a diverse array of short films by video artists and experimental filmmakers from around the world, including the USA, Italy, Sweden, Colombia, Iran and the UK. This year’s festival has had the most rigorous selection process since its inception three years ago, and the lineup is a captivating roster of both established and emerging artists from around the globe.
For the first time, the festival has invited renowned artists that have played important roles in video art and experimental film in recent years to showcase their work in the festival. These works are screening alongside pieces selected as part of the festival’s open call program. On Friday, February 8, the festival will host a panel discussion led by distinguished academics and industry professionals, as well as a gala reception at the Tribeca Cinemas’ elegant Varick Room bar, with several artists and panelists in attendance. The festival will conclude with the New York premiere of Lauren Edward’s feature documentary I SEND YOU THIS PLACE, which brings a unique perspective to the issues of spirituality and mental illness.
VAEFF aspires to become a public gateway into the ever-expanding and fluctuating worlds of experimental filmmaking and video art, and to expose a diverse audience to avant-garde video artists and experimental filmmakers. The festival is not only a platform for showcasing exceptional work, but also a forum for the public and artists to debate and exchange ideas. This year’s eclectic selection of works, along with the surrounding discussions and panels, will help further VAEFF founder Dan Fine’s desire to “democratize the relationship between artists, curators, institutions, and the public worldwide.”
The festival opens on Thursday, February 7 at 7pm with a series of exciting works from emerging artists as well as a new film from Allison Schulnik. This program looks at visions of destruction, environmental decay, political limbo, alternate memories, chaos and other “realms of possibility”. The following program at 9pm includes evocative works around issues of performance, gender, femininity and sexuality, as well as the premiere of a new piece by Kalup Linzy. Both Thursday screenings will be followed by Q&A sessions with several of the artists. Friday’s program begins at 7pm with a unique combination of short films from the two screenings on Thursday, followed by an in-depth panel discussion with artists, curators, and distinguished guests. At 9pm there will be a reception with food and open bar. On Saturday, February 9, the festival hosts the premiere of I SEND YOU THIS PLACE at 7pm, followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers.
All events are held at Tribeca Cinemas, located at 54 Varick Street. Tickets are ON SALE NOW from http://festival.videoart.net/tickets.php. A two-day pass for Thursday & Friday screenings and reception is $55. Tickets for each Thursday screening are $12.
